Is it normal to have the apprentice chipping out the mixer drum all day?

The boss just put our newest guy on drum duty and he's been at it for hours with a pneumatic hammer. I know that concrete buildup inside the mixer doesn't just disappear, but watching him lean into that side hatch while standing on the truck frame looks sketchy as hell. He's got no mask or anything and the dust is just caking onto his face. Is this really how you guys handle the dried stuff when it gets thick? I'm relatively new myself but I haven't had to do the chipping yet. It feels like a hazing ritual or something because of how miserable the work is. Maybe that's just the reality of maintaining these rigs. I'm curious if there's an actual tool for this that isn't just a jackhammer and pure muscle, or if the new guy always gets the short straw on this one. I don't want to be the guy who complains, but it seems like a lot for someone's first week. Is it worth saying something or should I just let him grind it out?


Chipping drums is easily one of the most dangerous and miserable jobs in the industry, and doing it without a respirator is a one-way ticket to silicosis. Concrete dust is basially ground-up silica, and breathing that for hours while trapped inside a steel echo chamber is a massive health violation. If the new guy is caked in white powder, he’s allready breathed in enugh to regret it later.

In most professional outfits, this is treated as a **confined space entry**. You don't just let a guy lean into a hatch while balancing on the truck frame. You need a lockout-tagout on the mixer controls so nobody accidentally starts the drum while he’s in there, and you usually need a hole watch—a second person standing outside to pull him out if he passes out from the heat or gets hurt. The reality is that some owners are just too cheap to pay for professional hydro-blasting. There are services that use high-pressure water jets to cut the buildup out in a fraction of the time without damaging the steel fins. Using a jackhammer is the old-school way that acutally ends up costing more in labor and wear on the equipment. Plus, a pneumatic hammer eventually weakens the drum walls if the operator isn't careful.

You shold definitely say somethig, specifically about the **respirator**. That’s not being a complainer, it’s basic safety compliance. If the boss won't even spring for a decent mask or a fan to pull the dust out, he's a hack who’s going to get someone killed or permanently disabled. It’s common for the new guy to get the worst jobs, but there’s a difference between paying your dues and being subjected to a literal health hazard without protection.

Man, I've been there. My first boss didn't care about safety either and I spent a week chipping out an old Mack. My ears were ringing for days even with plugs in. Tell the kid to grab some eye pro too, 'cause those concrete chips fly back like shrapnel in that tight space. Honestly, if the boss won't even give him a basic N95, he's probaly cutting corners elsewhere. It's a total hazing thing, but usally it's just 'cause the old timers don't wanna do it.

If you're still using a basic pneumatic chipper, you're living in the stone age. At least get the kid a Bosch BH2760VC or a Hilti TE 3000-AVR to cut down the vibration. Watching a rookie lean into a hatch without a fall arrest harness or even a simple 3M 6200 half-mask is straight-up negligence. Those drum fins are thinner than they look once they get some wear, and one wrong strike with a heavy bit creates a weak spot that’ll blow out under load. If the boss is too cheap for hydro-blasting, tell him to at least buy a box of P100 filters before that kid’s lungs turn to stone-and are shot.

While the focus on respiratory health is certainly warranted given the crystalline silica content, one must also scrutinize the specific metallurgy of the drum itself, as the repeated percussive impact from a pneumatic hammer—particularly when wielded by an inexperienced operator lacking the finesse to angle the chisel bit correctly—induces micro-fractures and work-hardening in the AR400 or AR450 abrasion-resistant steel. These structural compromises often lead to premature shell failure or catastrophic thinning of the mixing flights, wich, quite frankly, represents a far more significant long-term capital expenditure for the owner than the nominal cost of a high-efficiency particulate air filter or proper fall-restraint equipment for the novice.
