Finally got my cooler situation sorted for these long shifts on the residential site. I used to hit the drive-thru every day but it just makes me sluggish by 2 PM when we're trying to wrap up the framing. Today I packed light and it’s a game changer for staying alert. I went with a mix of high protein and a ton of citrus to keep the energy up. Got some sardines in mustard sauce for the kick and a couple of yogurts to keep things easy on the stomach. I also loaded up on oranges and a Gatorade so I’m defintely not worried about a vitamin C deficiency anytime soon. It's nice not having to hunt for a microwave or deal with soggy bread from a sandwich. Everything stays cool enough in the box even without a bag of ice taking up space. It’s simple but it works when you're out in the sun all day.
Finally dialed in my site lunch for the summer heat

I switched to a 20-quart Yeti after a summer of feeling like garbage from eating greasy burgers every noon. It’s hard to stay focused on a ladder when your stomach is doing flips from a heavy lunch. I found that prepping a big batch of cold pasta salad with plenty of grilled chicken and peppers on Sunday night keeps me fueled through Thursday.
While those sardines are great for protein, I usually stick to hard-boiled eggs and some sharp cheddar cheese. I keep them in a small Tupperware container so they don't get crushed by my water jugs. I’ve also moved away from the Gatorade and started using those Liquid I.V. packets. They don't have as much sugar, which helps me avoid that 3 PM crash when we're trying to get the last of the plywood up. One thing that helped me was freezing a couple of 16-ounce water bottles the night before. They act as ice packs throughout the morning, and then by the time 2 PM rolls around, they've melted just enough to be a slushy, ice-cold drink. It saves a lot of room in the box for actual food.
I can’t do the cold lunch thing, even when it’s 95 degrees out and we’re pouring concrete. If I don't have something warm, I feel like my body never really gets that fuel signal. I picked up a 24oz Stanley Food Jar last year and it has been a total shift in how I feel on site. I’ll heat up some homemade chili or a thick beef stew at 5 AM, and it’s still steaming when we break at noon.
The trick for me is the density. Those sardines and oranges are fine for a snack, but when I'm hauling 80-pound bags or swinging a hammer all afternoon, I need some serious carbs. I usually pack a heavy portion of brown rice mixed with black beans and some smoked sausage. It stays hot in the thermos and keeps me from hitting that wall around 3 PM.
I also gave up on the sports drinks becasue of the sugar crash. I've been sticking to a gallon jug of water with a pinch of Celtic sea salt and a squeeze of lemon. It keeps the muscle cramps away much better than the bottled stuff. Plus, having a hot meal acutally helps me regulate my temprature better when the sun is beating down, wierd as that sounds.
This is exactly what I needed to see! I just started my first apprenticeship and I've been struggling so hard with the midday slump. The frozen water bottle trick is genius, I'm defintely stealing that for tomorrow. Quick question though for the guys who have been around a while—does anyone have a recommendation for a brand of work pants that actualy breathe? I feel like I'm roasting in these standard ducks while I'm trying to eat my lunch!
