Anyone else notice the weird stuff that happens when the electricians arrive?

Just had a crew roll in to handle the digital signage and some of the wiring near the site entrance. I swear, as soon as the electricians get thier hands on anything with a screen or a control panel, things get wierd. It's like they have this specific brand of humor that nobody else on the crew quite gets. I’ve seen everythign from bizarre messages on the LED boards to weird little drawings hidden inside junction boxes. I'm curious if this is just a local thing or if everyone deals with this kind of stuff. It definitly makes the day more interesting, but I wonder where the line is. Do you guys think it’s better to just let them have their fun if the work is solid, or does it start to look unprofessional to the client? I’m torn becuase it keeps morale up, but man, some of the jokes are definitely out there. I'd love to hear how much slack you give your subs when they start getting creative with the equipment on site.


I’ve spent years around commercial sparkies, and those low-voltage guys wiring up the Siemens controllers are always the ones with the sharpies. Last summer on a retail build, I found a detailed sketch of a dragon inside a 4x4 junction box hidden behind a drywall patch. It didn't hurt anything, and honestly, the wiring was the cleanest I’ve seen—perfect 90-degree bends and every wire labeled with a Brady printer. Where I draw the line is the digital signage. If they’re testing a Daktronics board and put up somethig off-color while the GC or the owner is walking the site, that's a problem. I usally tell them to keep the jokes inside the panels. As long as the Klein tools are being used right and the circuit is balanced, a little hidden humor keeps the long hours manageable. If it’s customer-facing, though, they need to keep it strictly profesional.

Honestly, I have to push back on letting that stuff slide. I had a sub leave a 'joke' on a Lutron touch panel during a high-end residential job last month. The homeowner walked thru before I coud clear the test messages, and it was a nightmare trying to explain why thier $10k lighting system was displaying inside jokes instead of zone controls. It doesn't matter how tight the conduit runs are if the client thinks you're running a playground instead of a job site. I've also dealt with guys writing on the back of expensive stone or inside $500 cabinets. If that Sharpie bleeds or if a future tech sees a crude drawing while doing maintenace, it makes the whole outfit look amateur. I tell my guys to keep the humor in the break room. When you're working with digital signage or complex PLC cabinets, the documentation shoud be the only thing they're writing. We use Dymo labels and official log sheets for a reason. Keeping a tight ship on the small details is what prevents those awkward conversations during the final hand-off.

While the aesthetic of a well-organized terminal block is certainly satisfying, one must distinguish between the harmless permanence of a Sharpie sketch on a non-conductive surface and the high-risk volatility of utilizing the actual firmware string fields for any non-standard nomenclature. I once observed a technician configuring a Crestron system who renamed input sources with esoteric puns wich, while amusing to those familiar with the signal path, proved remarkably difficult to revert once the control logic became misaligned. If they are adhering to NEC standards and ensuring the load is properly balanced, I genrally overlook the internal graffiti provided it doesn't compromise the dielectric integrity of the enclosure.

I've found that if you get them focused on running a Fluke Networks LinkIQ on every drop, they have way less time to play around with the signage settings. When they know they have to hand over a stack of clean test reports at the end of the day, the creative energy ussually goes into the cable management instead of the firmware strings.

Plus, it’s hard for a client to complain about a hidden joke in a junction box when you show them the proffesional certification data from a Fluke. It shifts the conversation back to the quality of the install.

If they’re pulling Cat6 trough a 1-inch EMT with a Greenlee tugger and doing it right, I’m usally hands-off. But once they start configuring the BrightSign players or those Planar video walls, you’ve gotta watch the IP naming. I had a guy once set the static IPs to spell out some questionable sequences across the rack. You can use a Bosch laser all day to level the mounts, but it won't fix a 'creative' subnet. I tell my subs: if it’s in the rack or the tray, go nuts. But as soon as that signal hits the HDMI 2.1 port, keep it clean. Clients check those source menus more than you'd think.

Update: I started requiring Fluke reports like suggested, and it definitly kept the crew more focused on the technical side. Still, I caught a guy sketching on the inside of a panel cover yesterday. Since it’s hidden from the client, is it even worth a conversation? Or do you think letting the small stuff slide just invites bigger issues later on?
