I'm trying to wrap my head around a wierd situation with my electrical service. The utility crew came out twice and told me everthing was fine on thier end since the electrified ground issue was happening inside the house, but things got scary today. Every time I flip the breaker back on, I can see actual sparks flying up near where the overhead wires are anchored to the brick. It looks like it’s coming right from the insulator rack area near the drip loops. The electrician I finally called out says it’s a neutral backfeed, which sounds pretty serious. I'm a bit confused though. If the issue is backfeeding from inside, why are the sparks showing up outside at the service entrance connection point? I’m worried about the house catching fire if we keep testing it, but I also want to understand if the utility was just brushing me off before. Does a neutral backfeed ussually cause physical sparking at the weatherhead like that, or is there something else going on with those old splices?

The reason you’re seeing sparks at the weatherhead is becasue the utility neutral has likely failed completly, and your house is trying to use the earth or your metal siding as the return path for current. When you have a **lost neutral**, the electricity still wants to get back to the transformer. Since it can't go thru the dedicated wire, it flows through your grounding system, water pipes, and even the physical structure of your house. Those sparks near the insulator rack are happening because the current is jumping across the gap where your service entrance cable connects to the utility’s drop wires.
Your electrician is right about it being serious. If the neutral is broken at the splices near the drip loops, any 120V load you turn on is going to try and find a path home through anything conductive. This creates a massive voltage imbalance. You might see some lights go dim while others get super bright, wich can fry your electronics in seconds. The sparking indicates a high-resistance connection that's generating intense heat right against your house's exterior. Utility crews often do a quick voltage check at the meter and call it a day if they see 240V, but they don't always stress-test the neutral under load. Now that your electrician has confirmed it, you need to get the utility back out there and show them exactly where those sparks are. Tell them you have a **floating neutral** and an active fire hazard at the point of attachment. They usally prioritize these calls once an electrician puts their reputation behind the diagnosis.
Don't keep flipping that breaker to test it. Every time those sparks fly, you're risking a structural fire or sending high voltage into your appliances. Once the utility fixes that overhead splice—or replaces the triplex if it's frayed—the 'backfeed' feeling inside shold vanish because the electricity will finally have its proper path back to the grid.
Wow, those sparks sound absolutely wild! I just joined this forum becuase I'm starting to learn about home wiring, but this is way more intense than my little outlet project. Check those Kearney split bolts or those old Burndy crimps at the service head. If the utility guys just used a basic voltmeter, they missed it. You need a Beast of Burden or a similar load tester to relly pull some amps and expose that high-resistance connection. I’ve seen this happen with old Type SE cable where the braid frays right at the weatherhead. If that neutral is shot, your 120V circuits are probly seesawing between 80V and 160V right now. Get a Fluke 87V on your mains and watch the swing; if it's jumping, your electronics are toast. Don't let them leave til they've re-crimped the triplex.
Man, you're lucky you haven't fried every TV in the house yet. If the utility's still dragging their feet, tell 'em you're seeing arcing on the siding. Usually, that gets 'em moving faster than just saying there's a bad neutral. I've seen those old crimps get so corroded they basically become a space heater. Seriously though, keep that main breaker off 'til they swap those connectors. It's not worth burning the place down just to keep the fridge running.
While you're waiting on the utility, you shoud relly pick up a Klein Tools ET600 Digital Circuit Breaker Finder. I had the same sparking issue at the service head and used mine to map out exactly wich high-draw circuits were forcing that neutral current to jump the gap. It’s way safer than just guessing which breakers to keep off. Once the utility fixes the splice, you’ll want to check if any of your outlets got scorched from the voltage swing. I swear by the Southwire 41160S Receptacle Tester for a quick check. If it shows an open neutral after the 'fix,' the utility missed a spot.
Quick update—the utility finally fixed it! I pushed them to use a load tester like suggested, and they found a corroded split bolt that was failing under load. Turns out the neutral had completely separated right at the weatherhead. Once they replaced those old crimps, the sparking stopped immediately. Glad I didn't fry my appliances before getting it sorted!
