if you're talking about the new fangled mosquito traps, the ones I've heard about use carbon dioxide to mimic the human/mammalian respiratory profile. Hungry mosquitoes, thinking dinner is ready, are drawn towards the trap where they are promptly vaccuumed, incinerated or otherwise dispatched.

Don't know about fire ants.
