A friend showed me some pictures of a fungi she found growing in he
garden and I wondered whether anyone recognised this particula species?

You posted that at msplinks.com. Some security software (including mine, ZoneAlarm) blocks that site for some reason. Post your picture(s) at a place like

instead.
You might try searching "cup fungi" It is a large group so would have to just find a pic close to those.
