We’ve been doing some maintanence on our high-voltage switchgear lately and I noticed our safety gear cabinet is looking a bit bare. One of the guys mentioned we should have an insulated rescue hook handy whenever someone is working near the live busbars, even with the rubber mats and full arc flash suits on. I know the theory is to pull someone away if they get stuck, but I’ve never actualy seen one used in person. Is this somethig you guys actually keep staged right next to the work area or is it just another thing that sits in the back of the truck gathering dust? I'm curious if there's a specific distance requirement for where the second person should stand. I want to make sure if something goes wrong, the person holding the stick is in a spot where they can help without getting caught in the arc. It seems like a lot of equipment to manage when you're already in those heavy insulated boots. Do your safety inspectors actually check for the hook being present on site? I'm just trying to figure out if I need to order a new one before we start the next phase on Monday.

We always keep the rescue hook staged right at the entrance to the work zone, never buried in the truck. If an inspector walks on-site and doesn't see that **insulated hook** ready to go, they’ll shut the job down immediatly. It's one of those things you hope stays dusty, but you can't be caught without it when working near exposed busbars.
As for where the second person stands, they should definitely be outside the **arc flash boundary**. You don't want two victims if a phase-to-phase fault happens. The standby person needs a clear line of sight but enough distance to stay safe from the initial blast and heat. They should be positioned so they can reach in, hook the person's belt or shoulder, and pull them clear without entering the hazard zone themselves.
It feels like a lot of gear to manage, especally when you're alredy sweating in a Category 4 suit and clomping around in heavy dielectric boots. But the hook is the only way to safely break a person's contact with a live circuit if they get 'no-let-go' muscle contraction. I've been the guy holding the stick during a few sketchy racking procedures and it definitely changes your perspective on the job. You're the literal lifeline.
Definitely order a new one before Monday. Make sure it's rated for the highest voltage in that switchgear and keep it clean. A hook covered in shop grease or carbon dust can actually conduct, which defeats the whole purpose. It's better to have it and never touch it than to be standing there helpless while your partner is in trouble.
The grease and dust thing is a good call—I didn't realize how much the surface condition mattered. Does the hook have a mandatory testing cycle like our gloves do, or is it just a visual inspection? I'd worry about the fiberglass getting tiny cracks over time that we can't see.
Also, is there a trick to the actual 'hooking' part? I’ve heard conflicting things about aiming for the waist versus the torso. I want to make sure I'm not fumbling and wasting seconds if my partner actualy gets hung up. I'll definatly get that order in today so we aren't empty-handed.
Most places treat them like hot sticks—ussually a dielectric test every two years, but visual checks for cracks or 'tracking' should happen every single time you pull it out. If you see any splintering in the fiberglass, it’s a goner. Regarding the aim, go for the waist. It’s the center of gravity and usually where thier belt or harness provides a solid anchor point. Aiming for the shoulders or limbs is risky beacuse they can slip out or you might cause a secondary injury. Just remember to keep your own feet planted; you don't want to overbalance and fall into the arc zone while you're pulling.
