Anyone familiar with those antique Bryant "disappearing door" outlets from the 1890s?

Found one of these ancient Bryant outlets still recessed into the wood baseboard of my house from 1899 and it's honestly kind of terrifying. It has these little brass doors that flip open, but instead of a normal socket, there are just two metal prongs sitting right inside. It’s like a total invitation for a disaster if a kid ever got near it. I can't belive they used to install these things right at floor level. I did some digging in an old Bryant catalog and found the exact model, number 430. They call it a disappearing door outlet, which sounds fancy but it's relly just a dangerous-looking setup. I’m not even sure if the thing is still hot or if it’s just disconnected and left for show. Has anyone else run into these during a renovation? I’m debating wheather I should try to remove it or just leave it as a historical oddity, though I'm leaning toward leaving it alone so I don't accidentally shock myself on a century-old circuit.


Those are **Chapman-style** receptacles, and they are absolute death traps by modern standards. Bryant marketed them as "disappearing door" outlets because the little brass flaps swing inward when you push a plug in. What makes them so sketchy is that the female part of the connection was acutally on the cord end. The outlet itself has the exposed male prongs energized and waiting for someone to touch them. Back in 1899, "finger-safe" design wasn't even a concept yet. You realy need to determine if it’s still live before deciding to leave it as a decoration. Use a non-contact voltage tester first, but be careful. Old knob-and-tube wiring can be finicky with those testers, expecially if the wires are tucked deep or the insulation is thick. The only way to be 100% sure is to carefully back out the screws and use a multimeter on the terminals. If it's still energized, you've got a major safety issue. The cloth insulation on those old wires is likely brittle and will probably crumble as soon as you move the device.

If the circuit is dead, I'd say leave it in the baseboard. They're a fantastic piece of electrical history and far more interesting than a modern plastic Decora faceplate. Collectors actually hunt for these Bryant 430s because they're so distinctive. But if it's hot, you have to prioritize safety. Kill the power, disconnect it, and terminate the wires properly in a junction box. Just tucking live wires back into a wooden baseboard is asking for a structure fire. I've seen these in a few late 19th-century builds, and they always look like somethig out of a steampunk movie. They represent the era when electricity was still a luxury and people didn't quite grasp the dangers of exposed conductors. It’s wild to think they put these at floor level where a wet mop or a curious kid coud easily hit those prongs. If you do remove it, definitely keep the hardware—someone out there is likely looking for that exact model to complete a period-correct restoration.

Wait, so the cord had the 'female' part? That is totally backwards compared to how everthing works now. I always thought the 'poking' part was the side that didn't have power until it was plugged in. If I try to use a multimeter, is there a risk of the probes slipping and shorting those prongs together? I'm honestly a bit scared to get close to it now that I know they're basically live spikes. To the guy worried about the multimeter: yeah, shorting those prongs is a massive risk. If you slip, you’re looking at a nasty arc flash right in your face. If you have to test it, wrap some electrical tape around your probe tips so only the very ends are exposed. That’ll minimize the chances of bridging the gap. Another thing to check is if there's a dedicated switch for it. alot of these early baseboard receptacles were often wired to a wall switch becuase they were meant for floor lamps. If you find a mystery switch in that room that doesn't seem to do anything, it might be controlling that Bryant 430.

If you do decide to pull it, watch out for the box size. Those original Bryant housings are usally way smaller than a modern single-gang box. You won't be able to just screw in a standard outlet if you change your mind later—you'll likely have to route out the baseboard or find a vintage-style conversion plate.

Also, check the closet or the room behind that wall. I've seen these 'disappearing' outlets where the wires were actually fed through the baseboard from a junction box in a completly diferent room. They did some weird routing back in the 1890s to avoid tearing up the plaster.
