But I'm starting to have second thoughts about the power setup I chose for the bedrooms. While the PoE shades in the main areas work perfectly, the ones with the solar panels taped to the glass seem to be dying every time we get a week of overcast weather. I'm trying to figure out if I just have a bad batch of batteries or if this is just what happens when you don't hardwire everything. It's getting annoying having to manually charge the guest bath shade when it's supposed to be automated. The issue with solar panels taped to the glass is usually a combination of the window's Low-E coating and the angle of the sun during winter months. Most modern or replacement windows have metallic oxide layers that block UV and infrared, which effectively starves those tiny solar strips of the specific light spectrum they need to trickle charge the battery. If you're in a northern latitude, the sun stays so low that the eaves of your ranch might be shading the panels more than you realize, even on 'sunny' days. Since you already have PoE running in the main areas, you probably know that fishing cat6 through finished exterior walls is a nightmare, especially with horizontal fire blocking in 80s builds. That's likely why you skipped it originally. Instead of tearing up drywall, look for **ultra-flat USB-C extension cables**. You can tuck these into the gap between the window trim and the sheetrock, or even run them along the top of the baseboard. They're thin enough to be practically invisible if you match the color to your paint, and you can run them to a hidden outlet behind a nightstand or dresser.
For the guest bath, a small window facing north will never generate enough juice for solar to be viable. North-facing windows only get ambient, reflected light. You're better off just getting a **high-capacity power bank** and plugging it into the shade once every six months overnight. It’s less of a 'science project' than mounting a larger, external-grade solar panel on the siding, which is the only other way to get enough voltage on that side of the house.
If you really want to keep the solar setup, try moving the panel to the very bottom corner of the glass instead of the top. Sometimes getting it away from the shadow of the window header adds an extra hour of usable light per day. But honestly, if the battery is already showing signs of fatigue after eighteen months of deep discharge cycles during overcast weeks, the cells might be partially degraded. A hardwired 5V power supply is the only way to get that 'set it and forget it' reliability you're looking for.
I ran into the same headache with the solar strips on my back sliders. They’re basically useless if you have deep eaves. What worked for me was ditching the tape and using 3M Command strips to angle the panels slightly away from the glass. Even a ten-degree tilt toward the light made a difference. For the shades that still struggled, I stopped trying to make solar happen and bought a 10-foot magnetic charging cable. I keep the little magnetic tip permanently plugged into the shade motor. Now, when the battery gets low, I just snap the cable on from the floor using a broom handle with a clip. No ladders, no tearing out drywall, and it’s charged in two hours.

However, the bedroom with those deep eaves is still struggling since the sun never hits it directly. I’m thinking about ditching the solar there entirely.
