Most of the strength in those 80s shelves comes from the fact that **old-growth timber** was still more accessible and the milling standards were just different. Even the standard construction-grade pine you’d get at a local yard back then tended to have tighter grain patterns than the farm-grown stuff we see today. Faster growth cycles now mean wider rings and less density, which is why your modern 2x4 often feels like it's made of foam compared to a stud pulled out of a vintage build. The finish helps with moisture stability, but it's not the main reason they haven't sagged. That 1982 Varathane was likely a high-VOC oil-based formula that really soaked into the fibers and cured hard. Modern water-based finishes are convenient, but those old-school oil formulas provided a level of protection that kept the wood from checking and moving as much over the decades. If you’re going to replicate these, don’t skimp on the sealant, especally in a garage where humidity swings are common. Those old prices are a trip, but if you run the math, lumber hasn't acutally skyrocketed as much as people think—it's just the **grade quality** that has tanked. You used to be able to walk into a shop and pick through a pile of #2 common and find stuff that woud be considered "select" today. Now, you have to spend an hour digging through the bin just to find three boards that aren't shaped like a hockey stick.
If you’re going to build your own version, look for **Southern Yellow Pine** if you can find it, rather than just generic "whitewood" or SPF. It’s significantly denser and holds fasteners better. Also, don't just use drywall screws; get some actual structural screws and use wood glue on every joint. That's probably why those old shelves survived multiple moves—good wood glue creates a bond stronger than the wood itself once it’s fully set.

Definitely find a local lumber yard. The staff acutally knows thier stock, and you can usally find higher grades like C-select that haven't been sitting in a damp warehouse. To answer your question: yes, pre-drill everything. Southern Yellow Pine is a lot less forgiving than white pine or fir. If you drive a screw near the end of a board without a pilot hole, it's going to split right down the grain. I also suggest using a bit of paste wax on your screw threads; it makes driving them into that dense wood a lot easier on your impact driver and prevents snapping heads.
One thing to watch out for with modern lumber is the moisture content. Half the "kiln-dried" stuff at big stores is still soaking wet. If you build with that, the boards will shrink and twist as they dry out in your garage, and those tight joints will get loose fast. It's a good idea to let your lumber sit in the workspace for a week or two to acclimate before you start cutting.
Also, check if your brother's shelves have a thin plywood backer nailed on. Even a cheap piece of luan prevents "racking" way better than just screws and glue alone. That's ussually the secret to why those old units survive being dragged around during moves.
Check the span between the supports on those shelves. A big reason stuff from the 80s stays flat is becasue they didn't push the limits on distance. If you're building with modern pine, keep your spans under 32 inches, or even 24 if you're loading them with heavy tools. I'd also suggest adding a 'beefier' shelf edge. Gluing and nailing a 1x2 strip of hardwood vertically to the front face—basically a nosing—acts like a mini-I-beam and prevents sagging over time. It’s a low-cost trick to make modern, softer wood act way stiffer than it actualy is.
