I've been working on this floor-to-ceiling slatted wall for my staircase and used solid ash for the whole thing. It took way longer than I thougt it whould, mostly because I decided to hide a secret drawer and some shelving right into the vertical lines. It looks great now that it's done, but I'm a bit worried about the wood moving over time. Ash is pretty stable usually, but these pieces are long and thin. Since I didn't want any visible hardware, I used blind joinery for the little plant shelves that stick out from the slats. It's a tight fit, but I'm wondering if the seasonal humidity changes are going to make that hidden access panel stick. Does anyone have experience with vertical ash slats in a high-traffic area like a stairwell? I’m hoping the way I anchored them at the top and bottom will be enough to keep everything straight. The hidden drawer is the part that realy kicked my butt during the build process. Getting the grain to line up perfectly so it didn't stand out was a nightmare. If the wood bows even a quarter inch, the effect is basicly ruined. Would a different finish besides a light oil seal it better against moisture?

Ash is solid but definitely moves more than people think across the grain. Since these are long, thin slats anchored top and bottom, the main concern isn't just bowing, it's the **seasonal expansion** causing the slats to buckle if they don't have enought room in the channels. If you pinned them tight at both ends with no slip room, that quarter-inch bow you're worried about is almost a guarantee when the humidity spikes. You generaly need a bit of a float at the top anchor point to let the wood breathe vertically.
For that hidden drawer to stay flush, you really need to look at the internal framing. If the drawer box is also solid wood, make sure the grain direction matches the slats or use a stable Baltic birch for the box itself to prevent it from swelling and pushing the faceplate out of alignment. If that grain line breaks by even a few millimeters, the effect is gone. I ussually leave about a 3/32nd inch gap on the reveal; in a slatted design, the shadow line usually masks that gap perfectly and gives you a buffer for when the wood swells.
An oil finish looks great on ash but it's basially an open door for moisture vapor. If you’re worried about the stairwell being a high-traffic area with varying temps, you might want to switch to a **hardwax oil**. It seals the fibers significantly better than a standard mineral or linseed oil while keeping that matte, natural look. It won't stop movement entirely—nothing does—but it slows down the rate of exchange so the wood doesn't shock and warp during a sudden humid stretch.
Those blind joins for the plant shelves are the most likely spot to bind if the slats start to twist. Since they're cantilevered, any slight rotation in the vertical slat gets magnified at the edge of the shelf. If you start seeing the drawer stick or the shelves tilt, you might have to go back and add some hidden **blocking spacers** between the slats from the rear. It keeps the spacing consistent and prevents those long vertical runs from acting like springs.
I'm just starting out with smaller projects and the idea of a 'floating' top anchor sounds tricky. How do you actualy attach it so it stays secure but can still slide? Is there a specific bracket for that, or do you just over-drill the screw holes? I'm also curious about that hardwax oil—is it somthing a newbie can apply with a rag, or does it require a buffer? I’d hate to mess up the grain on a project that big.
If you're using push-to-open latches for that drawer, keep an eye on them. Ash is snappy; if a slat develops even a tiny cup, it’ll jam the mechanism before the visual gap even looks wrong. I usally swap out mechanical clickers for heavy-duty magnetic touch latches on hidden stuff because they allow for more wiggle room. Also, make sure you finished the back of those slats too. If the hidden side is raw wood and the front is oiled, you’ve basically built a bunch of moisture-sensitive springs that’ll curl as soon as the heat kicks on. Getting that uniform seal on all six sides is the only way to keep those long runs from bowing.
One thing that saved me on a project like this was painting the wall behind the slats a flat, matte black. If those ash pieces start to gap or move, the dark background hides the transition so you don't see the drywall peeking trough. It keeps the hidden drawer effect way more convincing if the wood starts to shrink during the winter.
Also, check if there's an HVAC vent right in that stairwell. Constant airflow can dry out one side of the slats faster than the other, which is ussually what causes them to twist or 'potato chip' even if they're anchored solid at the ends.
