I've been putting a ton of sweat equity into this cabin project lately. I did the roof, the wrap-around deck, and all the flooring solo, but this window wall trim is a whole diffrent beast. The gable height is just insane. I had to get my dad to come over and help becuase I couldn't handle those long trim pieces while balancing on a ladder that high up. We're using heavy timber for the framing and it has to look right against the vertical siding. I'm relly struggling with the transitions near the stone base where the slope of the hill makes ladder placement a total nightmare. It's nearly impossible to get a tight fit when the wind is blowing and you're twenty feet in the air. Has anyone found a better way to brace or maybe a specific jig for these steep angles? I'm supposed to start painting next week and I'm desperate to get the joints looking clean before the new lighting goes in.
How do you guys manage trim on those massive A-frame window walls?

Stop trying to balance on a ladder at twenty feet with long trim pieces. Renting a **towable man-lift** for a weekend is the best money you'll spend on a project like this. It gives you a stable platform to work from and lets you use both hands to pull those joints tight. If that's not in the budget, look into **pump jack scaffolding**. You can set the poles on the slope using mud sills and adjustable feet, wich beats any ladder setup when the ground is that uneven near the stone base.
To get those steep gable angles looking clean, don't try to cut and fit them individually in the air. I always **pre-assemble** the entire window surround or at least the peak miters on the ground. Use a high-quality exterior wood glue and pocket screws on the backside to lock the joints together. When you haul the assembly up, you're just nailing it home instead of fighting two pieces that want to slide past each other while the wind blows. It's much easier to manage one large piece with a helper than two floppy ones at elevation. For the transition at the stone base, back-cut your trim at a slight angle so it sits flush against the stone profile. If the stone is relly jagged, I usally run a flat horizontal **skirt board** or a beefy sill piece first. It gives you a consistent, level surface to terminate your vertical trim against. Then you can scribe the bottom of that skirt to the stone. It looks alot more intentional than trying to cope every vertical piece into a diferent rock.
Since you're using heavy timber framing, make sure you're accounting for movement. Those big gables catch a lot of wind load. If the framing isn't LSL or LVL, you'll likely see some seasonal shifting that opens up your trim joints. Using a high-quality flexible caulk before you paint next week will help hide those inevitable hairline cracks when the wood expands and contracts.
That pre-assembly trick sounds like a lifesaver, but how do you actually get a massive frame up there without the glue joints snapping? I’d be a nervous wreck trying to haul a huge piece up 20 feet. Do you need a special rig just to lift it safely? Also, I've never tried scribing before. Is that just using a basic compass to trace the stone, or is there a specific tool for that? I'm worried about leaving huge gaps if the rock is realy bumpy.
To keep those miter joints from snapping when you're hauling them up, screw a couple of temporary 2x4 "stiffeners" across the back of the frame before you lift. It keeps everythign rigid untill you've got a few nails in. Once it's secure, just back the screws out and you're golden. As for scribing, a simple compass from the school supply aisle works fine, but an AccuScribe tool is better for keeping your pencil vertical against rough stone. Just make sure your trim is plumb before you start marking, or the whole thing will look crooked once you cut to the line.
Keep an eye on the moisture content of that heavy timber before you seal everthing up. If those beams are still a bit green, they’re going to shrink like crazy once you turn the heat on inside the cabin. I’ve seen beautiful miter joints open up half an inch by the second winter. Since you're painting next week, maybe look into a high-stretch elastomeric sealant instead of cheap painter's caulk. It'll save you from having to haul that ladder back out next year when the wood starts moving and the joints inevitably shift.
