I just walked into a basement job to start the finish work and every single window is buried in about four inches of expanded spray foam. I know we need to seal things up for efficiency, but man, cleaning this up is going to take a minute. It’s got me wondering how you all handle the rough-in stage for these. Is it better to just go heavy with the foam and cut it back later, or are you guys trying to be more surgical with the straw? I see some crews who swear by the "more is more" approach for insulation value, but then I'm the one hacking away at it with a pull saw just to get a casing to sit flush. I'm curious if anyone prefers backer rod and caulk for these smaller gaps instead. Maybe it doesn't seal as well as the canned stuff, but the cleanup seems way easier. What’s your go-to for a tight seal that doesn't leave a mountain of yellow gunk for the trim guy to deal with?

I’ve been on both sides of this, and honestly, the "more is more" crew drives me nuts. I switched to using a Great Stuff Pro gun years ago because those cheap plastic straws are impossible to control. If you just run a thin, consistent bead about halfway back in the gap, it expands enough to seal without blowing out past the framing. I ussually aim for a 3/8-inch gap and try to leave room for the foam to grow inward rather than outward.
If the gap is wider than an inch, I’ll occasionally use some backer rod first just to give the foam somethig to grab onto, but I still prefer the low-expansion window and door foam. It stays flexible and won't bow the vinyl or wood jambs. Cutting back four inches of cured yellow mess is a total waste of material and labor. A sharp Japanese pull saw makes quick work of the excess, but you shouldn't have to use it on every single window if the installer actually cares about the trim stage.
I actually moved away from foam entirely for basement windows because of the mess and the risk of bowing those vinyl frames. In my experience, even the low-expansion stuff can get away from you if the humidity is high during the install. I started stuffing the gaps with strips of Rockwool Comfortbatt. It doesn't lose R-value if it gets damp from foundation sweat, and it’s way faster to pack in than waiting for foam to cure and expand.
To handle the draft, I run a bead of OSI Quad or a similar sealant over a foam backer rod on the interior side. It gives you a perfect depth gauge for your casing, and if I need to adjust the window shim later, I’m not fighting a hardened plastic shell. It takes five minutes and the finish crew doesn't have to spend half their day with a jab saw or a scraper. It’s a much cleaner system for those tight masonry openings.
Back in the day, we didn't have these fancy cans of yellow headache. We used to just pack the gaps tight with fiberglass scraps or oakum and call it a day. If you realy wanted a seal, you'd run a bead of high-quality caulk over the top. Now these young guys act like they're frosting a cake and leave us to saw trough it like lumber. I still keep a roll of backer rod in the truck for anything wider than a finger. It keeps the draft out without turning the window buck into a science project. If you can't see the wood for the foam, the installer was just being lazy.
I've seen too many guys try to trim that stuff while it's still tacky and it just smears everywhere. Total nightmare. I started taping the jambs with blue tape before the foamers show up. If they overdo it, I let it cure, run a blade, and the excess peels right off with the tape. Saves the finish and means I'm not scrubbing yellow spots off the vinyl for an hour. It's the only way to keep the frames from getting trashed when the rough-in crew's being lazy.
