Is there any way to make 1920s winder stairs safer for toddlers without a full tear-out?

I'm living in an old Portland craftsman with a staircase that honestly keeps me up at night. It’s got two 90-degree winder turns squeezed into a tiny 93 by 32 inch footprint, and the risers are nearly 8 inches high. With two little kids in the house, those narrow inner treads feel like a disaster waiting to happen once they get past the baby gate phase. I want to redesign this setup but I'm struggling with the math of fitting better geometry into such a cramped enclosure. Since the upstairs is a converted attic with a dormer, I don't have a ton of overhead room to work with either. I've thought about adding a secondary lower handrail for the kids or maybe installing something on the inside of the curve to keep them on the wider part of the steps, but I'm not sure if that's just a band-aid. Has anyone successfully reconfigured a tight winder like this to be more manageable, or am I stuck with the original footprint? I'd love to hear how professional builders would approach this before I start ripping out old treads.


The 93-inch by 32-inch footprint is incredibly restrictive, and in a 1920s craftsman, you're ussually fighting both the floor joist layout and the headroom clearance for that attic dormer. With 8-inch risers, you're alredy at the steep end of what’s comfortable. If you try to increase the tread depth to make the winders deeper, you'll inevitably run out of horizontal run and hit a wall or lose your head height at the ceiling cut-out.

Realistically, reconfiguring the wood framing within that same hole rarely yields a significant safety gain. Instead of a full teardown, focus on the **walk line**. Most people naturally hug the inside rail, wich is the most dangerous spot on a winder beacuse the tread tapers to almost nothing. Installing a sturdy handrail on the outside wall—the wide side of the turn—is the single best thing you can do. It forces everyone to walk where the treads are deepest. Adding a second, lower 'kid-height' rail at about 20-22 inches on that same outside wall will give your children a secure grip exactly where the steps are widest and safest. Another trick from the field is to use high-friction stair treads or a low-pile carpet runner with a very heavy-duty pad. It won't change the math of the rise and run, but it stops the 'socks-on-oak' slide that causes most falls on tight turns. If you're dead set on a structural change, the only way to fix the geometry is to 'steal' floor space from the hallway or the upstairs landing to extend the total run. But in those old Portland houses, that usually means moving a load-bearing wall or reframing the floor system, which is a massive jump in cost. Check the lighting while you're at it. alot of these old winders have a single dim bulb at the top that casts huge shadows on the lower turns. Installing some low-voltage LED tape under the overhanging nosing of each tread makes the edge of each step unmistakable, which helps kids and tired adults alike when they're moving between floors in the dark.

I’ve dealt with these exact Portland footprints before. If you’re not ready to pull a permit for a structural overhaul, you need to fix the surface grip. Those old 1920s oak treads are ice rinks. I’d look into the No-Slip Strip or even 3M Safety-Walk 710 tape. It’s industrial, but it stops the 'sock-slide' on those narrow inner points. Also, check your nosing. If you've got more than a 1 1/4" overhang, you're looking at a trip hazard on the way up. I’d trim them back and install a 1/4" plywood luan riser skin to stiffen everthing up. It doesn't fix the 8" rise, but it makes the climb feel way more solid.

While the previous suggestions regarding friction and rail placement are pragmatically sound, I whould argue that you must scrutinize the actual geometry of your winder treads, specifically the 'point of convergence' where the treads meet the newel post. If those 1920s treads terminate in a true sharp point—essentially a zero-inch inside tread—you might consider 'boxing out' the inner corner with a small structural block to force a minimum tread depth of at least six inches at the walk line, though this necessarily shifts the entire run and will likely require a surgical alteration of your stringers to maintain consistent riser height throughout the transition.

Seen plenty of these 'toe-catchers' in those old Portland builds. Back when I was framing, we’d see guys try to squeeze blood from a stone with those footprints. If you're ripping treads anyway, check if those old stringers—the 'horses'—are still plumb. They ussually dry out and lean over a century, making that narrow side even more of a cliff. One trick we used to do was slightly 'over-radiusing' the nosing with a heavy round-over bit. It sounds counter-intuitive, but a sharp 90-degree edge on an 8-inch riser is a shin-breaker for a toddler. Rounding them off gives a bit more forgiveness when they inevitably slip. Just don't go so far you lose your footing.

This all sounds so complicated. I barely understand what a stringer is, let alone how to tell if it's leaning. If I were to try that idea of 'boxing out' the inner corner to make the treads wider, would that make the steps feel even steeper? I'm also curious about the LED tape idea—is that something a total novice can wire up safely, or do you have to cut into the actual wood to hide the wires?
