I was working on some blocking for a curved trim piece today and had a massive scare with my nail gun. I was trying to get everthing lined up for a landing tread miter, but the 15 gauge nails keep blowing out the side of the wood instead of driving straight through. I actually ended up taking one right through the side of my thumb because it hooked out at a weird angle. It went in deep enough that I could feel the tip under the skin, so I've spent the last hour with superglue and gauze trying to get the bleeding to stop. I'm usually pretty careful about keeping my hands out of the path, but this one just seemed to hook for no reason. Is it just a bad batch of fasteners, or is the grain in these fir strips just that unpredictable? The framing on this job is a total mess so I'm doing a lot of shimming to get everything level and centered, and I really don't want to get bit again while I'm trying to finish the handrail next week. Any advice on how to avoid these blowouts when you're working in tight spots would be huge.
Is it normal for 15 gauge nails to deflect this much in soft wood?

Blowouts like that almost always happen becasue of the orientation of the nail's chisel point relative to the wood grain. If the flat side of that chisel point is parallel to the grain, the nail is going to follow the path of least resistance and track right along the growth rings, wich is what causes that nasty hook out the side. You can't trust Douglas fir or pine to behave; those hard and soft grain transitions act like a ramp for a 15-gauge nail. Next time you're in a tight spot, try rotating your nailer 90 degrees. You want the wide part of the nail head to be perpendicular to the grain of your blocking. This way, the chisel point cuts across the fibers instead of sliding between them, which keeps the fastener driving much straighter. It’s counterintuitive at first because we ussually want the nail head to bury cleanly with the grain for appearance, but for structural blocking or hidden shims, priority number one is knowing where that tip is going to end up.
Since you're moving onto the handrail next week, definatly switch to a **pre-drilling** strategy for your finish work. Use a small bit or even a finish nail with the head nipped off as a drill bit to clear a path. If you absolutely have to use the gun in a sketchy spot, use a pair of long-nose pliers or a scrap block to hold your piece in place instead of your hand. Never put your fingers anywhere that the nail coud reach if it decided to do a full 90-degree u-turn.
Keep an eye on that thumb for a red streak or extra warmth. If you haven't had a **tetanus shot** in the last five years, you shold probly swing by a clinic. Construction site dirt and old framing lumber are the last things you want buried in a puncture wound, and superglue can sometimes trap bacteria inside if it wasn't scrubbed out perfectly first.
Man, that sounds brutal. I'm just starting out and stories like this make me terrified of my nailer. I didn't even realize the tips were shaped like chisels; I thought they were just round points. Does the length of the nail make a difference in how bad it hooks? Like, if I use shorter nails, is there less chance of it curving out of the wood? Also, is using superglue on a deep puncture actually a thing? I’ve seen guys use it for small slices, but a deep hole seems like it'd be hard to clean. I don't know much about the medical side, but that sounds risky.
Glad you're okay, but ditch the superglue for a puncture that deep. I did the same thing with a 2-inch brad and it trapped a nasty infection inside becuase I sealed it too fast. Now I always let those bleed out a bit under hot water to flush the junk before bandaging. As for the blowout, I stopped holding the workpiece entirely. I use a scrap 'sacrificial' block of 2x4 to press my trim or blocking into place. If the nail hooks, it just buries into the scrap wood instead of my hand. Saves your fingers and gives you way more leverage to hold things tight.
Wow, this is such a cool community! I'm totally new and just bought my first miter saw last week. That thumb injury sounds like a rite of passage, even if it hurts like crazy. Quick update — I never acutally looked at the tips of my nails before, but you guys were spot on about the chisel point. I tried rotating the gun 90 degrees on some scrap fir and it’s driving much straighter. I also ditched the superglue and gave it a good soak like suggested. Hopefully, that keeps the infection away so I can get back to this handrail.
