I finally got my journeyman card through the UBC at 38, wich was a huge personal win since I started this whole career shift way later than most. It’s a relief to have that metal card in my pocket and the signatures on it feel official, but honestly, I’m feeling a bit of a gap in my knowledge now that the expectations have shifted. Most of my apprenticeship was spent on big commercial concrete jobs where I was just following the lead, so now that I'm supposed to be the guy with the answers, I’m getting stuck on some of the more complex stair stringer math. It’s wierd becasue I have the title now, but I still find myself looking over my shoulder for a foreman to double-check my math before I make a cut. I’m worried the younger guys who have been doing this since they were 18 are going to see right through me. Has anyone else who started late felt like they’re just playing catch-up even after they’ve officially finished thier hours? I don’t want to be the guy who’s just getting by on the title without having the technical skills to back it up 100%.
Is it normal to feel like I’m still guessing on layout even after journeying out?

I went through the exact same thing getting my card in my mid-30s after spending three years doing nothing but tilt-up walls and slab work. You get that card and suddenly everyone expects you to know the roof framing geometry or complex stairs that you never actualy touched in the field. It’s called being a **paper journeyman**, and half the guys on the site felt that way at some point, even if they won't admit it. The transition from taking orders to giving them is the hardest part of the trade.
For the stair math, the biggest mistake people make is forgetting to account for the finished floor thickness at the top and the bottom. If you're struggling with the layout, get a pair of **stair gauges** for your framing square. They're cheap brass knobs that clamp onto the tongue and blade. Once you set your rise and run, you just slide it down the lumber. It eliminates the creep you get when you try to mark each step individually with just a pencil line. Take your total rise in inches and divide by 7 to find your number of treads, then adjust to stay between 6 and 8 inches for a comfortable step. Don't sweat looking over your shoulder. I still double-check my layout before I drop the saw blade on an expensive stringer. If a younger guy sees you checking your math, he's seeing a pro who doesn't want to waste material. If you're unsure, frame it as a sanity check to the foreman. Just say, "Hey, I'm getting 7 and 3/16 for my rise on this, does that look right for this slab?" It shows you've done the work but are being diligent about the specific site conditions. Most of the real learning happens in the first two years after you get your card. The apprenticeship gives you the foundation, but the journey is where you actually figure out the tricks. Keep a small notebook in your vest with the common formulas for stairs and rafters. Nobody cares if you look at a cheat sheet as long as the finished product is level and doesn't squeak.
Pick up a Construction Master Pro 4065 and stop guessing. I’ve seen guys with thirty years in the trade pull that calculator out for every set of stairs because one bad cut on a 2x12 is a waste of time and money. Use it to find your stringer length and the exact angle for your plumb cuts. Confidence comes from your kit, too. Ditch the beat-up speed square and get a Tajima GS-300 or a solid Starrett. If your tools are dead-on, your layout will be too. Being a journeyman means you’re smart enugh to use the tech available to get the job done right the first time.
I'm just starting out and honestly, the math part of stairs is what scares me the most. I barely trust myself to measure a window frame right now, so hearing that even journeymen get nervous about stringers makes me feel a bit better.
When you mentioned accounting for the floor thickness at the top and bottom, does that mean the bottom step has to be cut shorter than the others? I don't relly get how that works without making the whole thing wobbly. Also, are those stair gauges better than just using a steady hand with a framing square?
For the floor thickness thing, yeah—cut the bottom of the stringer by the thickness of your tread material. If you're using 1-inch treads, chop an inch off the bottom. I messed that up on my first deck and my bottom step was a huge trip hazard while the top one was tiny. Now I just write 'Drop the Stringer' in sharpie on my layout as a reminder. It’s the only way I don't forget when the crew is barking for the stairs to be done.
Spot on. That notebook suggestion is a lifesaver. One thing I'd add for the stringers is to always check the crown of your 2x12 before you start your layout. If you don't keep the crown facing 'up' (towards the treads), your stringer will sag over time and pull away from the header, making all that perfect math useless. It’s a small detail but it’s the difference between a solid set and a bouncy one.
