Picked up a stack of OSB for a 4ft deep raised platform I'm building and didn't even think to pull my tape til I was allready home and unloading. Since it's a simple platform I was just going to lay them down and screw them in without staggering, but nothing was lining up right. Turns out every single sheet is about a quarter inch short. They're all measuring right at 47 and 7/8 inches instead of the full 48. It doesn't sound like much until you're trying to hit your joists and realize the edge of the board is barely hanging on. I guess I shold have checked them in the lumber yard but who expects a standard sheet to be off by that much? Now I've got to decide if I'm hauling this whole load back or just making it work with some wierd blocking. Has anyone else noticed the quality control slipping this bad on basic sheathing?

Most OSB and plywood sheathing is manufactured roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch short on purpose, specifically to allow for the expansion gap you're supposed to leave between sheets. If you check the stamp on the board, it usually says **sized for spacing** somewhere in the fine print. Manufacturers do this because if you were to butt full 48-inch sheets tight against each other, the first time the humidity spikes or the wood gets damp, the whole floor whould buckle and pop as the wood expands. It’s a common trap when you’re doing a small project like a 4-foot platform. You layout your joists at 16 or 24 inches on center starting from the edge, assuming the sheet will land right in the middle of that last joist. But since the sheet is acutally 47-7/8, you’re losing that fraction and suddenly your edge is barely catching the wood. This isn't actually a quality control slip-up; it's been the industry standard for a long time, though some mills are more aggressive with the undersizing than others. Since you're already home and the framing is done, you’ve basically got two choices. You can haul it back and hunt for "true" 48-inch sheets—which are getting harder to find and usually sold as "industrial" or furniture grade—or you can just **scab on some blocking** to the side of your joists where the edges are falling short. Just cut some scraps of 2x4 and screw them to the side of the joist to give that OSB edge a wider landing zone to bite into. Next time, pull your tape on the first sheet before you start layout. alot of guys will pull their joist centers slightly short to compensate for that first gap, or just plan to trim the framing once the lids are on. It’s annoying when you’re expecting a nominal dimension to be exact, but that's just how the material comes off the line these days.
I've been scratching my head over my layout for a small project and thougt I was just terrible at math. That explains why my edges never seemed to hit the center of the joists. Is there a specific tool you guys use to make sure that gap stays even all the way down, or do you just eyeball it?
I've seen those H-clips at the store—do they actualy help with the spacing, or are they just for supporting the edges? I'm trying to figure out if they're worth the extra couple bucks for a basic platform or if just sticking a nail between the sheets is the way to go.
H-clips are mainly for roof spans to keep the edges from dipping between rafters, but they’re great for keeping that gap uniform. If you’re doing a floor or platform where you don’t need clips, just use 10d nails as spacers. Drop a couple of 'em between the sheets as you lay the next one down, then pull 'em out once you've got a few screws in. It’s alot faster than eyeballing it and cheaper than buying dedicated spacers. Just make sure you don't accidentally pin the nail under the edge!
I learned this the hard way on a shed build a few years back. Now I always pull my tape on the first sheet out of the pile before I even start my layout. If it’s undersized, I’ll acutally pull my joist centers at 15-15/16 or whatever fits that specific batch so I'm not fighting for an edge the whole time. It's annoying that a '4x8' isn't actually 4x8, but that’s just how it goes now. Just wait til you realize your 2x4s are barely 3-1/2 inches wide too!
One thing I've noticed is that while the length and width are 'sized for spacing,' the squareness is hit or miss lately. I always throw my framing square on the first few sheets. If they're even a tiny bit off, that quarter-inch gap disappears on one end and doubles on the other as you move down the line.
Also, watch your screw placement on those short edges. Since you're already fighting for a landing on the joist, it's easy to get too close to the rim of the OSB. I try to pre-drill if I'm within 3/8 of the edge to keep it from flaking out, expecially with the cheaper stuff that hasn't been stored perfectly dry.
