Drilling for barrel hinges in half-inch stock is a nightmare without a drill press and a dedicated jig to keep everythign perfectly square. When you're working with that little material, you've only got maybe a sixteenth of an inch of wood left on either side of the hole. If your bit wanders even slightly, it's going to blow out the face and ruin the molding. One trick is to **wick thin CA glue** into the wood fibers around your drill site before you ever touch it with a bit. It helps stabilize the grain and prevents that brittle splintering. You shoud also be using a high-quality Forstner bit rather than a standard twist bit. If you can, clamp a sacrificial block of hardwood over the face of the molding. This puts the wood under compression while you drill from the back, wich drastically reduces the chance of the grain lifting or cracking. If that half-inch thickness is still giving you trouble, you might want to ditch the barrel hinges for **pivot pins** or a miniature knife hinge. Barrel hinges require a deep hole that removes a lot of structural integrity. A pivot pin only needs a tiny hole on the ends of the trim piece. It’s a lot more forgiving on thin decorative moldings and still gives you that completley invisible look when the latch is closed. For the latch itself, a magnetic catch is usually better than a mechanical one because it doesn't require any force to release. This protects those tiny hinges from snapping under pressure over time. It's all about ensuring the build has enough durability to last, otherwise, it just shows that the person who built it didn't have much of a stake in the quality of the finish.
I’ve pulled this off using Soss 101 invisible hinges instead of those generic brass barrels. The 101s are tiny—only 1/2-inch wide—but they distribute the load better than a round hole. If the molding is still too flimsy, I back the piece with a 1/8-inch strip of G10 Garolite. That stuff is bulletproof and bonds like crazy with West System G/flex 655 epoxy. You really ought to consider the kerf width when making that initial separation because even a fine-tooth Japanese pull saw leaves a visible gap that interrupts the continuous grain pattern of the molding. To truly obfuscate the seam, I prefer a compound miter cut that angles back into the casing, effectively creating an overlapping lip that shadows the joint line when viewed from any standard architectural vantage point. Also, make sure you're indexing your hinge points from the finished face rather than the back, or you'll find that your radial swing binds against the fixed surround, necessitating an unsightly chamfer just to get the thing to clear the opening.
