I opened up my freezer today and noticed some of the ice cubes in the bin have this realy gross brownish-yellow tint to them. Most of the cubes are fine, but every few inches there's one that looks like it's been soaked in tea or somethig. It’s a relatively new fridge, only about two years old, so I wasn't expecting to see wierd colors in the water line or anything like that. I checked the filter and it seems okay, but the ice just looks nasty. I feel like a total idiot even asking this, but am I supposed to be taking the whole ice maker assembly out to scrub it? I looked at it and it's not exactly easy to get to. It seems like I'd have to unscrew half the back panel just to get the tray out to clean it. I've never had to do that with any other fridge I've owned before. Does anyone else actually do that regularly or is there something else going on with my plumbing that I shoud be worried about? I'm hoping it's just some weird buildup and not a major mechanical issue.

Brown ice in a newer fridge usually points to your water source or sediment buildup rather than a mechanical failure. If your city is flushing hydrants or if you have recently shut off the main water valve for any reason, sediment gets kicked up in the pipes. becuase the fridge line is often tapped off a low point or is at the end of a long plumbing run, it acts like a trap for all that gunk. The fridge filter catches most of it, but it can eventually get bypassed or saturated, leading to those tea-colored cubes. You definitely do not need to unscrew the back panel or dismantle the motor assembly to fix this. Most modern ice makers are designed to be self-contained units that you should not be messing with internally. However, you should absolutely pull the **ice bin** out and give it a thorough scrub. Use warm water and a little bit of white vinegar or mild soap. If there is a biofilm or mold starting to grow in the bin itself, it can discolor the ice as it sits there waiting to be used.
Check the age of your filter too. Even if the 'change filter' light hasn't come on yet, a heavy hit of sediment from a city water main flush can clog a filter in a single afternoon. If you see that brownish tint, the filter's internal carbon block might be spent or compromised. I woud swap it out for a fresh one and then run at least two or three gallons of water trough the door dispenser to clear the lines before letting the ice maker start up again.
One other possibility is the water supply line itself. If you have those old copper lines, they can sometimes corrode or accumulate mineral scale that flakes off. But since your fridge is only two years old, it is more likely just external sediment. Dump the entire bin of ice, sanitize the bucket, swap the filter, and see if the next batch comes out clear. If it keeps happening, you might want to look at the shut-off valve under your sink or in the basement to see if it is corroded.
I never thought about the fridge line acting like a trap for gunk. If it is sediment from a water main flush, does that mean the stuff is just sitting in the bottom of the tank inside the fridge? I'm worried that even if I change the filter, there's still a bunch of brown water trapped in the system.
Is there a way to flush the ice maker line specifically? I know the door dispenser has its own path, but I'm worried about the water that alredy made it into the ice tray mechanism. I don't want to waste a whole new filter if the lines are still full of murky water.
To flush the ice maker line specifically, you basically just have to let it cycle. Once you’ve run a few gallons thru the door to clear the main reservoir, the remaining 'dirty' water is just in that small tube leading up to the tray. Just toss the first three or four batches of ice it makes.
Also, check your shut-off valve. If it’s a saddle valve—the kind that just clamps onto a pipe—they’re notorious for trapping sediment and corroding right at the puncture point. If that’s the source, you’ll keep getting flakes no matter how many filters you buy. Replacing it with a proper T-valve is usually the permanent fix.
Check the actual ice tray mold for any peeling. On some models, the non-stick coating can start to flake off after a couple of years, and it looks exactly like brown sediment or tea stains in the ice. Get a flashlight and peek up at the underside of the unit where the cubes form. If the finish is bubbling or pitted, those little flakes are hitching a ride in your cubes. If that’s the case, cleaning won't fix it—you’ll just have to swap out the whole ice maker unit.
