When I stick my nose close to gas the burner, I smell gas. Is this normal?

I know it might sound silly, but I am a pretty paranoid person. I just moved into a new apartment. This is the first time I've ever dealt with a gas stove. Does anyone know if it's okay to smell a little gas, when you stick your nose close to the burner, when it is turned off? I don't smell it throughout my apartment; only when I bend down and stick my nose next to the burners. I had the gas company come for a different issue with the broiler. They seemed to think it looked fine, but I never asked them about this particular question. Thank you.
