Just saw a builder-spec laundry room that actually makes sense

I was out on a service call late Friday afternoon and walked into a laundry room that honestly blew my mind. Most of the time, high-end custom builds just shove a single stack in a closet and call it a day, but this setup had two full sets of LG ThinQ front-loaders integrated perfectly into the cabinetry. They went with that dark metallic finish against bright white millwork and it looked incredible. Having four units running simultaneously is a total game-changer for a house this size. I spent a few minutes checking out how they handled the venting and vibration dampening behind the scenes becuase usually these built-ins are a nightmare to service. This builder actually left enough clearance to get to the dispensers and the stack kits without having to tear out the wall. It's rare to see someone prioritize the workflow like that. It’s one of those things you don't realize you need until you see it done right. If more contractors took the time to think about high-capacity needs and actual accessibility, my job woud be a lot easier. Everything was flush, the stainless drums were spotless, and the whole room felt more like a command center than a chore space.


We put in a side-by-side double setup with Electrolux 627s when we finished our basement last year, and I cannot imagine going back. Having two washers going at once saves so much time on Sundays. One thing I learned the hard way, though, was the drainage. Even with a 2-inch standpipe, having both machines pump out at the exact same time almost flooded the utility room untill we adjusted the plumbing. I relly agree with the accessibility point. Most builders leave about zero clearance on the sides, making it impossible to clean out the pump filter without pulling the whole unit out. We insisted our cabinet guy leave a four-inch gap on the left side of our machines. It looks a little less "custom" becasue of the filler strip, but my back thanks me every time I have to check the lines or clear a coin from the trap. The dark finish on the LGs looks sharp, but we went with the basic white because our laundry room doesn't get much natural light. It’s less about the aesthetics for us and more about the sheer volume of towels and sports gear we can process in a single afternoon. If you're building a house for a family of five, skipping the second unit is a mistake you'll regret for years.

I went a slightly different route with our remodel by splitting the types of machines instead of matching them. We have a heavy-duty Speed Queen top-loader for rugs and work clothes, paired with a Miele Heat Pump dryer stack for the delicate stuff. While those dark metallic LGs look sharp, I’ve found that having specialized machines handles our actual laundry variety much better than four identical drums.

The cabinetry integration is where I usually get nervous. Even with the clearance you mentioned, I worry about the long-term heat buildup in those tight enclosures. When we did our setup, I insisted on a vent grille in the side panels and an oversized drip pan that spans both units. It doesn't look as seamless as a flush setup, but after seeing my neighbor have to pull out a whole wall to fix a simple leak on his integrated set, I’m okay with a little extra gap for peace of mind. Plus, the vibration from four units spinning at once on a second floor would probably rattle the teeth right out of my head.

I am curious if that builder had the foresight to install four dedicated 20-amp circuits for those units, as attempting to operate multiple high-draw heating elements on a shared line is a guaranteed recipe for a tripped breaker during the peak of a sanitization cycle. While the LG ThinQ’s AI DD technology is certainly adept at adjusting drum motions based on fabric density, I remain somewhat skeptical regarding the long-term calibration of those sensors when they are subjected to the harmonic resonance generated by four high-RPM motors operating within a single cabinetry envelope. Did you happen to notice if the builder utilized any specialized vibration-dampening pedestals or reinforced the joists to mitigate the inevitable structural oscillation?

Spot on with the accessibility point. Builders always forget that LG front-loaders have that emergency drain hose and filter located right at the bottom left. I’ve seen so many custom installs where they forget to cut a notch in the kickplate or millwork for that access door. If you can't get to that little door to drain the manual hose before opening the pump filter, you're looking at a gallon of stagnant water soaking into those nice white cabinets.
