I was doing a pork roast on the air fry setting the other night and about forty-five minutes in, I heard a sound like a literal gunshot coming from the kitchen. My glass baking dish had completely shattered into a million tiny shards all over the heating element and the meat. It was a total disaster and honestly pretty startling to see glass everywhere inside the oven cavity. After cleaning up the mess and doing some digging into thermal shock, I realized that the intense, focused heat from the air fry fan was just way too much for that older tempered glass. Those rapid temperature fluctuations are no joke when you have a cold roast sitting right in the middle of the dish. It essentially creates hot spots that the glass can't handle. I am just relieved the oven door stayed intact and I didn't have to call a repairman for the heating element. From now on, I am sticking to my heavy-duty metal roasting pans for anything involving high-velocity air. It definatly isn't worth losing a dinner or spending two hours vacuuming glass out of every single crevice.

I had almost the exact same thing happen last Thanksgiving with a 9x13 Pyrex dish. I was trying to crisp up some chicken thighs using the convection roast setting, which is basicly the same high-airflow tech as air fry. Suddenly, there was a loud "pop" and the bottom of the dish just turned into gravel. It turns out that those newer soda-lime glass dishes are way more prone to that than the old borosilicate ones our grandmothers used.
Even if the dish says it is oven-safe, the fan-forced air creates these micro-stress points, especally if any cold liquid drips from the meat onto the hot surface. I spent hours with a shop vac trying to get the tiny slivers out of the convection fan housing. It was a nightmare. Now I strictly use my Lodge cast iron or a heavy rimmed Nordic Ware sheet pan for anything with the fan on. It just isn't worth the risk of eating glass or ruining the oven's internals.
I actualy stopped using glass for anything over 375 degrees after a similar scare, but my issue wasn't the glass type as much as it was micro-scratches. I used to scrub my 9x13 dishes with those green abrasive pads, not realizing I was creating tiny stress points. When that high-velocity air hits a pre-scratched surface, it's like a ticking time bomb regardless of wheather it's borosilicate or soda-lime. Now, I exclusively use my Lodge cast iron skillet or a heavy stoneware baker for the air fry mode. The heat distribution is so much more consistent, and I don't have to worry about a stray drop of cold water or a temperture spike causing a catastrophe. Plus, the crust on a roast is much better when it's sitting on seasoned iron anyway. It's a bit heavier to lug out of the bottom cabinet, but the peace of mind while I'm in the other room is a huge relief.
I learned the hard way that even if the dish survives, the cleanup is what kills you. After my last 'explosion,' I realized a bunch of tiny glass bits had melted right into the oven's textured floor. I had to use a razor blade and a lot of patience to scrape it flat again so the racks wouldn't snag. Now, I strictly use a heavy-duty carbon steel roasting pan for my air frying. It gets that high-heat sear way better than glass ever did, and I don't have to worry about shards getting stuck in the door gasket. If you haven't checked your gasket yet, run a damp microfiber cloth along the seal—you’d be surprised where those tiny pieces hide.
Air fry modes on these newer ranges, like the Frigidaire Gallery or the GE Profile series, are basially convection on steroids. The fan RPM is significantly higher, which causes rapid evaporation and localized surface cooling. If you’re pulling a roast straight from a 38-degree fridge and dropping it into a 425-degree oven on Air Fry, you’re asking for a blowout.
I’ve completly transitioned to my All-Clad D3 roasting pan or a heavy-duty USA Pan half-sheet for anything high-airflow. Even 'thermal shock resistant' glass can't handle that massive temperture delta when the air is moving at those speeds. Save the glass for a low-and-slow 325-degree bake in a standard thermal oven.
Ugh, that sound is the absolute worst. Honestly, I don't even trust glass on the counter anymore, let alone in an air fry oven. I switched to stainless steel for everythign high-heat because I'm paranoid about those tiny shards getting into the convection fan motor. If a piece gets stuck in the bearings, you're looking at a way more expensive fix than just a lost dinner. Anyone else notice the glass feels thinner on the newer stuff too? Doesn't feel nearly as solid as the old pans.
Quick update — switching to metal pans has helped a ton, but I'm still struggling with the cleanup. Someone mentioned glass bits melting into the oven floor, and that's exactly what happened to me. I've been using a razor blade, but it's taking forever. Has anyone successfully gotten the tiny shards out of the door seal without ruining the rubber?
