Is 5,000 BTU really enough to cool down a humid apartment?

I'm dealing with some pretty brutal heat waves here in Canada lately and my place has been hitting 35 degrees Celsius inside when it gets bad. It is an older building on the second floor with those drafty original wooden windows, so the insulation is basically non-existent. Between the heat and the humidity staying around 60-70%, everything feels damp and my poor senior cat is just miserable. I do a lot of oven cooking and hang-dry my laundry in the living room, which I know makes the humidity spikes even worse. My property manager is planning to install a 5,000 BTU window unit for me and he seems convinced that will be plenty for my space. The layout is just a simple rectangle with a living area and a bedroom, but I'm relly worried it won't be powerful enough to actualy drop the temperature to my comfort zone of 23 degrees. Is 5,000 BTU actually going to handle the humidity and the heat from the oven, or should I be pushing for something bigger? I don't want to get this installed only to find out it can't keep up when the next heat wave hits.

Have you ruled out just changing your habits before you fight for a bigger unit? If you're still running the oven and hanging wet laundry during a 35-degree heatwave, even a 10,000 BTU unit is going to feel like it's failing. You're basially fighting against yourself. Have you tried doing your laundry at a laundromat or using a slow cooker instead of the oven during the peaks? Totally agree with the others. A 5,000 BTU unit is going to be running for its life in an old building like that. One thing everyone forgot to mention is the drain hole. Most of these small modern units are designed to splash the condensate water onto the condenser coils to help cool them down, but with 70% humidity and wet laundry inside, that pan is going to fill up instantly. If the unit isn't tilted slightly backward, you'll end up with a puddle on your floor or inside your wall becuase it can't keep up with the drainage.
