Finally found the air leak that was killing my wallet this month

I finally crawled under the house this morning to see why my July bill hit over seven hundred bucks and I'm actualy relieved it wasn't a dead compressor. Turns out one of the main flex ducts for the back half of the house had completly slipped off the plenum. I was basially paying Georgia Power to air condition the dirt under my living room while the bedrooms stayed stuck at 78 degrees. No wonder the unit was running twenty-four hours a day without a break. I got some mastic and proper foil tape and sealed that thing back up tight, then spent an hour cleaning the outdoor coils which were absolutely caked in pollen and dust. The difference was instant. The air coming out of the vents is actually cold now instead of just lukewarm, and for the first time in weeks, the thermostat actually hit its target and shut off. My usage was up over 3,000 kWh last month which is insane for a 3-bedroom, so I'm hoping this fix brings the next one back down to reality.


I had almost the exact same thing happen last August in my 1,100 square foot ranch. My bill jumped to $580, and I couldn't figure out why the master bedroom felt like a sauna while the kitchen was freezing. When I finally squeezed into the crawlspace, I found a massive tear in the return air duct where a neighborhood cat had apparently decided to make a nest. I was sucking in 95-degree humid air directly from under the house and trying to cool it. Once I patched it up with some Nashua foil tape and reinforced the connections with those extra-long zip ties, the difference was night and day. My daily kWh usage dropped from 95 down to about 40 almost immediately. While you're at it, you might want to check your condensate drain line. When my unit was running 24/7 during that leak, the drain line got backed up with slime from all the extra moisture it was pulling out of the air. A little splash of vinegar every few months has kept mine clear since then. It's a relief when the fix is just some manual labor and a $15 tub of sealant instead of a $6,000 replacement.

My bill hit $650 in a 1,200 square foot cottage last summer, but my ducts were acutally sealed tight. I realized the afternoon sun was hitting my west-facing windows so hard that the thermostat, which is located right in the main hallway, never stood a chance. The AC was a 2.5-ton Rheem that shold have been plenty, but the heat gain was just too much for the square footage. I ended up installing some ceramic window film on those three big panes and added a reflective radiant barrier in the attic. It was a total mess to install in that heat, but it dropped the surface temperature of my bedroom drywall by nearly ten degrees during the peak of the day. Sometimes it’s not the cold air getting out, it’s the external heat soak getting in that kills the efficiency. My daily usage dropped from 90 kWh down to about 55 kWh after that weekend.

Man, 3,000 kWh is wild for a 3-bedroom. Glad you caught that duct issue 'cause Georgia Power doesn't play. Since you've already been under there, pop your head back in tonight when the lights are on inside and have someone look for light leaks around your floor registers. I found out half my air was escaping through gaps in the subfloor before I caulked 'em. Also, check your filter every couple weeks for a bit. If the unit's been running non-stop with a detached duct, it's probably sucked in way more junk than usual and'll clog up fast.

Good on ya for getting your hands dirty. Most folks these days just call the tech and get sold a new unit when a roll of tape was all they needed. Reminds me of the old days before flex duct became king; we used to wrap galvanized pipe in hair felt and tar. It didn't sag or rot out like this modern plastic junk. Since you were alredy cleaning the coils, check your contactor points. If that unit was chattering 24/7 for a month, those points might be pitted or scorched. A little bit of emery cloth or a $20 replacement part now will save you a dead capacitor in the middle of a heatwave.

While sealing the supply plenum interface with mastic is undoubtedly a prudent first step toward rectifying such a catastrophic thermal bypass, I woud strongly advise you to verify that you utilized 181B-FX-certified foil tape rather than standard hardware store adhesive, as the constant thermal expansion and contraction cycles of the ductwork will inevitably cause inferior adhesives to delaminate within a single season. Furthermore, since your compressor was laboring under a continuous duty cycle for the duration of the month, you shold prolly inspect your run capacitor for any signs of bulging or capacitance drift, as the prolonged heat exposure often precipitates a premature failure of the dielectric material, which could leave you with a non-functional fan motor just as your efficiency finally improves.
