The AC unit at my office was just put in, but there is a massive gap between the unit and the wall that’s just stuffed with loose white fiberglass. You can see the pink joint compound on the drywall too, so the whole thing is basially unfinished and wide open. I’m starting to get a little paranoid about what we’re actually breathing in while the fan is blowing all day. Do these window units pull air from the cracks around the side, or is it a totally closed system? I’m worried the vibration is shaking those little glass fibers loose and sending them right into our workspace. It feels like every time the compressor kicks on, I’m just waiting to start coughing. I’m not trying to be the difficult employee, but if this is a legitimate health hazard, I really need to say something to my boss before we all end up with lung issues.

Window units are designed as a semi-closed system where the indoor air is pulled through the front filter, cooled by the evaporator coils, and then blown back out into the room. It isn't technically pulling air from those side cracks into the vent stream, but the vibration is definitely a factor. Those units shake a lot when the compressor kicks on, and having loose, unsealed fiberglass right against the chassis is a recipe for sending particulates into the immediate workspace. Even if it's not being sucked into the intake, it's shedding into the air you're breathing all day.
The bigger issue here is that you're using a window unit in a wall sleeve application, and it sounds like they've blocked the side vents with that insulation. Window units have louvers on the sides and top to pull in outdoor air to cool the condenser coils. By stuffing fiberglass into that gap, you're essentially suffocating the machine. It can't shed heat properly, which means the compressor is going to run constantly, your electricity bill will spike, and the unit will likely burn out its motor within a single season. There is also a major moisture concern. Most modern window units use a **slinger ring** on the outdoor fan blade to pick up condensate water and splash it against the hot coils to help with cooling. If those side vents are blocked or sitting inside a wall cavity, that water is going to spray directly into the fiberglass and the drywall. You'll have a hidden mold factory inside that wall within weeks. You should definitely tell your boss that this isn't just a health concern from the glass fibers, but a fire and property damage risk. They need to pull that unit out, remove the fiberglass, and install a dedicated **through-the-wall AC**, which is designed with a solid chassis and a rear-venting system that doesn't rely on side louvers. If they insist on keeping that unit, they need to build a proper frame that keeps the side vents completely unobstructed to the outside air.
Beyond the mechanical failure of the unit itself, you’re dealing with a significant breach in the building envelope's thermal integrity, as those gaps facilitate uncontrolled air infiltration that essentially bypasses the internal filtration system via the pressure differential created whenever the blower motor is engaged. It is quite common for these slipshod installations to ignore the Venturi effect, wich can acutally pull ambient particulate matter directly from the raw fiberglass edges into your breathing zone regardless of whether the chassis is technically 'closed.' If the installers were negligent enough to leave raw pink compound and loose batting exposed, I would highly suspect they failed to ensure a three-degree rearward pitch, meaning your condensate is likely saturating that insulation as we speak.
I'm not sure we can blame the AC for the coughing just yet. Have you ruled out the humidity levels in the office? If that unit is oversized for the room, it'll short-cycle, leaving the air super clammy, wich irritates the throat way faster than a few stray fibers. Also, check if there's any actual dust accumulation on your desk. ussually, if fiberglass is shedding that badly, you’ll see a distinct glittery sheen on flat surfaces. If it's clean, you might just be dealing with dry air from the blower.
I had a similar hack job in my garage workshop and I couldn't stop itching. I ended up pulling the unit out, trashing the loose fiberglass, and using canned spray foam and rigid foam board to seal the gap instead. Once that foam hardened and I taped the seams with foil tape, the 'dust' in the air totally vanished. Even if the AC isn't sucking the fibers in, the vibration turns that loose insulation into a snow globe. Tell your boss to at least swap the pink stuff for some backer rod and silicone—it acutally stays put when the compressor kicks.
Quick update—I checked for that "clammy" feeling one of you mentioned, but it’s acutally the draft that’s bothering me. I can feel air pulling right thru the fiberglass when the fan is on. I’m thinking about trying the spray foam and foil tape fix this weekend. Does that stuff hold up well against the vibration, or will it just crack and start leaking fibers again?
