Where to buy 100A double pole switch?

Hi,

I am having my electricity meter replaced in a couple of weeks and was thinking it might be worth installing a 100A double-pole switch between the meter and the consumer unit at the same time (as I am planning to add a second consumer unit in the near-ish future, so it would be kind of useful to be able to cut off the supply).

However I haven't been able to find a supplier that sells such a thing...

Does anybody have any ideas?

Regards Martin

Enclosure: Screwfix 74436, switch: Screwfix 53010

Or Screwfix 46968 if you only need 63A.

Think they're called isolators, but aren't cheap...

The meter fixer should be able to do this free of charge. I know we do them free in our area (Scottish Power / Manweb) !

What you might need to do is call the supplier back and just make sure its added to his job sheet...

May I ask why it would be a double pole switch. i.e. is it necessary to open the 230 volt live wire and also open the neutral wire. Curious, especially since I understand that in most installations the neutral wire is earthed at or near the CU where the service enters the residence?

Yes.

Neutral isn't always bonded to the earth at the origin of the supply, in quite a few cases you either supply your own earth or the earth provided by the REC is brought in on a seperate cable to the neutral.

Hmm - well I tried it with Scottish Power when they put my meter in and they wouldn't! The within-company inconsistency doesn't surprise me one jot though... just don't get me started...

Tell me about it, I spent about 3 hours on the phone to Powergen / Yorkshire Elec yesterday trying to figure out who would do it for me. In the end neither of them took responsibility, which is why I'm going to fit it myself.

And it doesn't help that some of the Powergen 'customer service operators' clearly have no understanding of how electricity actually works... :)
