types of nails

I've just moved into a new flat and every nail I try to bang into any wall almost instantly bends!

Are there different types of nails, perhaps sharper ones or a tougher metal? What should I look out for in the shops?

I just want basic nails/pins for pictures etc....

I've tried different hammers, rubber mallet, toffee hammer, normal claw hammer... the nails just bend after the second strike!

Thanks!

Try 'masonary' nails. They are toughened so you can nail into bricks concrete etc., but They tend to be brittle & can snap.

When you say new, is it a newly constructed flat or just new to you. If it is an older flat then you are obviously hitting the brick. You would need a masonary nail to get into that but your best bet is to drill holes and put in rawlplugs and screws.

Please forgive me, but we are talking about masonry nails here, aren't we ?

And in a new flat you won't?

No, you'd hit the flimsy breeze block\thermalite and end up with a 2' square hole in the wall. When he says brick, he means brick!

A real brick in a new flat, are you joking?

The only thing you need to buy in a new flat is plasterboard plugs!

You'll probably only try them once. IMHO they are pretty impossible to get into hard brick if not supported (as you would want for a picture). If you are nailing timber to a wall and the nail is supported by the timber and you hit them bl**dy hard and bl**dy straight, they sometimes go in properly. In other circumstances they are dangerous as they are apt to ping across the room at about the speed of sound when you hit them. We've probably all bought them, given up on them (with much swearing) and, as someone else has said, bitten the bullet and put a plug and screw in.

Thanks for all your replies! It's a great start. Just to clear up any confusion, it's not a new flat, just new to me :) the building is a

5-floor ex-wandsworth council block, indeed made of brick.

I will look for some maisonary nails today and give them a go!

Thanks again!
