Soffit boards

What are 15 year old soffit boards likely to be made of? I want to drill some holes in them. They look like asbestos, but I can't imagine they are at only 15 years old.

Nah. its a gypsum board that is like asbestos board, but is probably cement board with glass fibres in it.

Probably just as nasty to inhale the dust as absestos frankly.

But street legal

Asbestos was still in daily use until the present gov banned it a few years ago. It was a very good building material. It is going to cost me a lot to replace the garage roof which is covered in it.

Assume the soffit is asbestos and wear a decent mask when you drill it. Also pick a still day to avoid sharing it with the neighbours. Remember the dust may be on your clothes and in your hair so clean up well.

How long is a pievc of string?

What do you need to get in there for?

Put a cup or tin underneath it and drill through that into it and the dust will only drop when you break through. Or get into the space from above.

15 years may well be just fibre/cement board, 20 may be borderline. But it depends where you are and what company built the properties

Asbestos board is generally more rigid, with less flexing than cement board, and the imprinted pattern is different - squares/dimples more widely spaced. But these are only rough guidelines - only a test will tell, and best assume asbestos unless tested and found to be otherwise.
