[OT] Accumulated electrical 'stuff'

303 power amp was nothing special - the valve one before it was probably better - if that was the II.

Even the 4series wasn't that bright. Really it took till the end of the

70's before transistors were better than valves in terms of crossover distortion.

BTDTGTTS. IIRC the garage and loft involved half a dozen trips to the dump with the back seats down and load area full...

Yep but some of those jars and tins contained useful stuuf like proper brass panel pins (window beads for the use of).

nail.

I do but they all go in one big pot and then get taken for recycling. Pricy metals (copper, brass, ali, lead) get weighed in.

Ah but that won't be ordinary string it will be baler twine and baler twine is second only to gaffer tape at holding the world together, B-)

Not just cheaper, but easier to obtain. A delay of course, but almost any widget can be ordered these days, without the need for a shelf full of paper catalogues, and without the need for multiple accounts.

It was. The II was their famous amp. Its control unit, the 22, was not impressive.

You don't want me to tell you of someone I know who checked her deceased hubby's re-furbed 22 system out in the rubbish do you;-(?.....

Umm .. well seeing it was devised in what was it?, 1967 or thereabouts not too bad for its time...

Well it does have the nice warm fuzzy sound glowing valves about it so perhaps thats why some like it.

Bit like vinyl really, an acquired taste...

Ever heard a well set up 303 surprising what they can do apart from the

45 odd watt power limitation and the 405 with a few relatively simple modifications is another pleasant surprise especially the over 100 watt per channel 520 version remove that transformer input and replace with a THAT series balanced line receiver another superb amp.

But do remember that a lot of this was designed a long time ago now and owners don't usually give them away and if theres one thing that QUAD are renowned for is that ELS one of those, right material and the sense of being there is well, something else:)....

The Quad II ruled. The 303, meh. It was a huge step back. All you get with a 303 is a brand name.

No, its because it sounds good

each to their own.

The ESLs are pretty sweet.

Quad II...

of course, until someone discovers the distortionless amplifier

I don't think thats a problem anymore really, the "distortionless" program source might be worthy of some attention..

Don't get me started on MPEG coding and transcoding please;!....

For all practical purposes quality amps have been distortionless for the last 20 years...

certainly insignificant compared to loudspeakers.

Of course if you like distortion....

The 33/303 was in the category, IMO.

Yes, 0.1% or 0.01% rather than 2-3% for the speaker.
