Agreed about the software but I have come across a few older HP printers (not certain now, but I think LJ 4) which produced a horrible slightly petrol-like smell. Nothing obviously wrong and they carried on working, but I certainly wouldn't want that in an office, let alone at home.
The LJ4 runs its motor 24/7, no standby mode.
I have an LJ5M & despair of what will happen when it finally packs up. I think (IIRC) it was £35 on eBay.
