Ok what have I done wrong!!

They're both normal. But one's normally open, one normally closed. The normally open one would be the one you'd use for one way switching. That's why it's called this.

And some switches use L1 and some use L2 for one way operation. I did a complete house without first looking at the embossed white writing on the white background that stated "use L2 for one way". I then had to change the switched wire to L2 in all the rooms.

Yes - I've found this between makers. Perhaps an EU directive on two way switch marking would make sense?

No imagination, some people. You don't change the wiring - you lift out the sheet of plastboard the switch is attached to and refit upside down, of course! If the switch isn't positioned in the middle of a sheet, throw a wobbly, and then reluctantly take a scorpion saw to the surrounding PB to be able to do the flip.

If possible, cut through the live switch cables while using the saw.

Don't they pass on *any* basic tricks of the trade these days?
