New toaster

Having (see thread above) almost burnt my house down with a toaster that stays on when the bread jams down, does anyone know a manufacturer who makes toasters that actually turn off when complete through a mechanism other than the holder popping up? I have no intention of buying another of that deathtrap design.

Dualit non popup - very expensive but quite superb. High powered so they toast without drying out the bread. Five year gaurantee. 1,2 or 4 slice switch. Rotary timer. Maintainable.

I thought they all had an emergency stat that worked if things got jammed up?

Tell that to my old toaster.

At least it goaded me into buying all the fire safety stuff that I left behind in my old house. I've now got my fire blanket and a 6kg ABC powder in the kitchen. I took the opportunity to purchase a 9 litre AFFF foam for the bedroom for escape purposes. At least it'll give me something heavy enough to smash the windows with!

Very nice. Do they offer 25 year secured loans on it?

I guess it depends if that operates before or after the toast catches fire!

Er no. But you won't have to buy a new toaster every two years! Ours has been going strong for eight years and as I say - its maintainable - screw assembled with easily sourced parts.

I think Argos do a ten pound one in eternal beau if that suits you better :-).

Mine just has a sticker on it saying it should not be used unattended!

Well, I'm probably looking for stainless steel in around the 20 quid point. Unfortunately, the argos catalogue don't indicate which of their products burn your house down if the bread sticks.

So, what's the cheapest place for a 4 slice Dualit?

Amazon have it for 137.97 and free postage....any advance?

I got mine in Jersey for 95 quid at a commercial kitchen outfitters. No VAT in Jersey but it was eight years ago - god knows how much it costs now.

They are a big beast, so the £110 2 slice may be better. It really is the Makita of toasters & a proper design classic.

Bob, what is this funny attachment that is attached to your posts that I dare not open?

I can report that Costco have them at 135.11 for the 4 slice version, including two sandwich holders. We need the 4 slice version due to high consumption by the kids. Even they would have trouble keeping up with the claimed output of 130 slices an hour!

I BOUGHT IT! Must 'sample' later...

Beware the Dualit idea of "customer service" if it does go wrong though. My lightly-used £250+ espresso maker has failed twice in the first few months (the same fault). They have repaired it but refused my request for a new one the second time - or so I must assume since they didn't have the courtesy to reply to my letters. Par for the course for a ten quid cheapie but not - in my view - for this very expensive stuff.
