New Ladders

Hi all. I bought an extending ladder a few months ago. Are they usually difficult to extend when brand new? Mine has a what I think is a safety mechanism fixed to it.. about 3 foot from the bottom on one side. I think this is what is making it 'impossible' for me to lift the extension part..

Thanks.

Not in my experience. Perhaps it depends on the type of ladder.

Arthur,

Any chance of a picture or website where we could see one?

That sounds like a catch doing what it's meant to do - stop the upper section(s) lifting off the rung inadvertently. It should pivot outwards to allow you to extend them to the desired length, then push it back.

Anything like the following?

a triple ladder there are two of them here.

I am of course referring to the right-hand bits at the upper and lower portions of the picture, and not the stile clamps in the centre!

Hi. Yes, the device near the bottom of the right hand side looks similair. When my ladder is closed the 'thumb grip' is perpendicular to the ladder. I assume a user is meant to apply downward pressure on this and the device rotates away from the rear section of the ladder. But I can't make it shift at all.

Some are really tight when first used.
