Interior door adjustment

Hello,

I have a problem with an interior door... When closed the gap beneath the door is approx 10mm however the door will only open 45 degrees before it catches on the carpet. After investigating the levels I have discovered that although the door frame is plumb the floor slopes upwards towards the hinge side of the frame. The question is can I rehang the door with the hinges adjusted to enable the door to open clear of the carpet? If so which hinge should be repositioned and in what plane?

Many thanks, Ian Perthshire

Fit some rising butt hinges. These lift the door by around 10mm as the door opens.

Chop half an inch off the bottom of the door and buy a furry snake draught excluder.

The message from "ianw" contains these words:

You could move the bottom hinge towards the obstruction, but rising butts are a better solution.

Use rising butt hinges. If you move one of your present hinges out of line then the door will only touch the frame at one point when closed (unless it bends).

If you move /both/ sides of the lower hinge out, the door will open higher, (but not as much as with butt hinges) and will still fit flush to the frame. It will also self close to some extent. It may or may not be the answer to the OP's problem. A 5mm movement of the hinge will give about 2mm rise in the edge of the dooor.

I guess there would have to be considerable sloppiness in the hinges for the door to move at all. Maybe if the top and bottom hinges wer also aligned on the same axis it might work...
