hot tap

Hello

The hot tap over our bath is driving me crazy....when you first turn it on, no water comes out, then after turning as far as possible eventually a trickle of hot water grudgingly starts to come out.....is this likely to be a simple job of replacing a washer or are we facing something more serious? Any help or advice for a seriously useless DIYer would be most welcome!

TIA

Is it just this one tap? Are the other hot taps ok? If so, it's likely that the washer has become detached from the spindle, and is continuing to block the hole.

To check this, you need to turn off the hot water (hopefully there's a gate valve in the cold feed from the header tank to the bottom of the hot cylinder), run the tap until no more water comes out, and then unscrew the works from the body. If, when you take the works out, there isn't a rubber washer on the end, you'll need to hook it out from the tap body. When you've got this far, replace the washer whatever it's state. Re-assemble the tap, and turn on the cold feed again.

Hopefully, with a new washer fitted, all will be well. If not, there may be an air lock or blockage. If this happens, come back here for more advice.

The hot tap washer is stuck on its seating. What usually happens is that the O-ring seals in the spiral mechanism fail due to scale abrasion, letting water into the spiral. This causes the taps to become difficult to turn on or off, increases wear in the spiral, and may cause either leakage at the spindle at the top, or the tap will not open at all.

(or a competitor who is currently trading) and search for "tap reviver" you will get what you need - replacement innards. You can usually re-use the old handles if you want them to match.

You need to turn off the water to the tap first.

The following are instructions for changing the washer, but show the inside of a tap clearly.

I would at first suspect that the washer has become unattached to the jumper,or that the internal screw drive has come down and disinaged it self from the the tap valve, switch water of and undo tap and check
