Please don't flame me if this is a silly question but why would anybody want to know the status of the national grid?

well one of the purposes was to produce a report like this

a consultancy has already done it..:-)

But my main thrust was to provide instant simple evidence to people who think 'we have loads of wind and solar power on the grid, and pumped storage' with the counter proposition that in fact we have bugger all of any of those.

Despite all the willy waving from the renewables lobby.

I hope to extend it to do database recording and run some 'what if' scenarios over it in terms of generation mix, and carbon footprint thereof. But that's a longer term project.

I think Chris wonders whether willy waving creates renewable energy :-)

Since when has renewable energy been about creating or harvesting renewable energy?

It's about harvesting renewable subsidies, and creating renewable obligation certificates. Energy doesn't come into it.
