Bosch 'SELFCUT' flat bits - review.

Buggered my 22mm flat bit the other day, drilling holes for deck lights & hit a coach bolt. Trust me, flat bits won't drill through coach bolts :-)

Ordering some stuff from TS, I noticed these (link from Axminster has better detail)

to be twice as fast as a normal flat bit, thought I'd give one a try. Very impressive! At least twice the drilling speed, probably more, it actually took me by surprise the first time I used it. Really nice clean hole as well.

Only drawback is that when drilling a blind hole you have to reverse it out like an auger.

Claimed to last three times longer than a standard bit - if it does I'll be happy with the extra cost.

Does that mean you can hit *three* coach bolts before it's knackered?

I've made a mental note not to do that again :-)

I had to fit 20 deck lights & thankfully I didn't hit the bolt until hole

19! Hole 20 was worn through rather than drilled.

Trouble is one[*] often can't tell where there's a nail or screw embedded in a piece of wood one's drilling. So I've resisted buying super-duper bits like this: buy the cheap ones, maybe sharpen them up once or twice, but basically they're disposable.

  • well, this one, in the work I do, anyway

The easiest way to find a hidden nail or screw is to use a new bit:-)

Major use for the 22mm one I goosed was drilling doors for latches which is fairly safe. Next time I fit deck lights I'll prolly buy a cheap 22mm bit in case.

Could do, but you have to prise the core out of the holesaw after every cut, so a flat bit is quicker innit?
