Can I use 3 wires on 220v from a genset to the house, or must it be 4 wires? What is conventional?
What is the conduit? Metal could be considered the ground so the three wires would be OK. If its not metal then you need to pull a seperate ground. At least this is what is considered the norm for wiring. Maybe generators are different? But someone will still need to know what the conduit is.

4 wires is the right way to do it.
It won't be conduit. It'll be cord like welder pigtail or dock power cords.
