Tempered glass for a window in a bathroom

Hi,

Is a tempered glass window a requirement in a bathroom near a shower or is it a requirement only if the window is in the shower? This is for a house in NJ. I would appreciate you clarifications.

Thanks..

Check local codes, but generally, only doors need tempered glass. If the window is in a low spot where you can fall into it, tempered maybe a smart idea.

Tempered glass is typically a requirement for glass doors that someone may try and walk through.

It *may* be required if the window is very low -- say 30 ins or less off the floor, but probably not. However, you might consider it a smart move if the window is that low and you have small children.

Call the permit folks at your local City Hall. They will most likely be able to tell you right away and their answer will be a lot more authoritative than anything you'll find on Usenet!

Harry, every year a number of kids are injured in accidents involving non-tempered glass in or next to a door. Even if you don't have kids, some may visit or the next owner of your home is likely to. It is not ridiculous to follow the code, it is ridiculous not to.

If it's anywhere where you're able to hit it when you slip in the shower, it should be tempered.
