Since poly is varnish, that would be a tough test.

For someone who knows nothing let me explain.A simple test to tell shellac from oil varnish is a little alchohol on a Q tip.A simple test to tell acrylic from oil varnish it a little acetone on a q tip.A simple test to tell lacqure from oil varnish is a q tip with lacquer thinner on it the lacquer will turn cloudy for a moment.I was most hummbly wondering from the source of all knowlage if there was a similar test to tell polyurethane synthetic varnish from oil resin varnish.Thank you much if you have the answer.Tinker On Wed, 18 Feb 2004 20:54:08 -0600 (CST), snipped-for-privacy@webtv.net (m Ransley) wrote:

I don't know of any similar chemical test for poly/resin varnish but they are considerably different visually, the poly having the well known "plasticy" look. Additionally, they abrade differently...scraping resin varnish will get you powdery shavings.

If it really matters, the usual oil based varnishes have a much lower softening point than polurethanes, so a deft test with a hair dryer or similar heat source will give you a clue. HTH

If you rub the coating briskly with your hand, the varnish sometimes has a very different distictictive odor.
Good Luck.
