I'm surprised it does its thing for so long when everything around it is at much higher temperature, and it has no inherent cooling ability.

That's pretty neat, though. Would make good bearings - apart for the power needed to keep it sufficiently cold ;-)

There are, or at least were, kits available to demonstrate the Meissener Effect in your kitchen. They were the subject of countless kids' science fair projects. It's all died down, now, so maybe time to roll it out again.
