It has been what, 20 years or more, since the giant slot cars they race had anything to do with actual vehicles you could buy at a dealership. They are all purpose-built vehicles that happen to be sponsored by car companies, nothing more. And since 'car of tomorrow' came along, they are even more like slot cars, with identical bodies that don't even have the same contours as the actual street cars.

I miss the old days, when they could only race bodies and engines and drivetrains, that you could at least buy something with the same characteristics and dimensions. Design a new shape for the track, you had to sell 500 or 1000 or whatever of the same shape at the dealerships. That is what led to aero noses and flush glass and slick shapes on street cars. Now street cars (and especially pickups) all have cartoon styling, looking more like 1970s Hot Wheels cars with exaggerated bumps and flares and squared-off roofs and such, for no apparent reason. UGLY!

About 55 years ago I would go to stock car races. That is normal cars. Owners would tape over head and tail lights and some tape on side windows. These were the cars they drove every day. Hudsons would win all the races. WW

Back about that time I used to go to watch demolition derbies once or twice a year.

Are they still popular events anywhere? I don't think I've seen any advertised around here in Red Sox Nation recently.

Don't bother telling me that it's because Boston drivers stage them on the streets every day, I already figured that one out myself.

Hmmmm - I drive a 91 Stang (2.3L) just under 320,000 Km on the engine (Original). I have done most of the oil changes and all of the tune-ups. It probably hasn't cost me more than $4,000 in unscheduled repairs in the past 18 - almost 19 years. It has never needed a tow... has always been able to limp into the mechanic under its own power.

I'd buy FORD again!

I also know a gorgeous woman who was severely burned when her Mustang caught fire after being rear-ended. The early Stangs were the worst for fires;No barrier between trunk and passenger compartment,and the gas tank was open to the trunk. collision sprays gas into the trunk and passenger compartment.

I also can't imagine a Mustang pony car with a 2.3L 4cyl. engine....not exactly a sportscar.Very underpowered.

Is it at least turbocharged???

Pretty much ALL cars had that gas tank arrangement back then. Gen I was basically a reskinned Falcon. As to the tiny engines in 'Stangs- even a lot of the gen I cars had six-bangers. The glorified-Pinto era cars were a response to Gas Crisis one, back in '73. When CAFE hit, they sold the

4-bangers as the entry-level model to make their MPG numbers. That continued into the Fox-body era. Yeah, a 4-cyl Mustang w/o turbo is pretty slow, but most people never drive past 50% anyway. (Only the niche SVO model had turbo, and most died young.) The vanilla 4-cyl were okay as a commuter car, as long as nobody else was on board, and you didn't use the AC. The ones with the 302 and stiff suspension were pretty fun. I had a Fox-body station wagon which basically had all the same guts as a base model Mustang GT. Loved that car, but rust got it- Ford did have a problem with crappy steel, and metal fatigue where the floorpan had angles in it.

Almost all the county fairs here in Eastern Kansas, Western Mo. (don't know about farther out) feature a demo derby as the Saturday night feature to end the fair. They're a hoot!

Jeff , up here in Maine at some of the County fairs they still have demolition derbys..2 classes , FWD , RWD....The Blueberry Festival in Union , Maine in late August is the one that I go to near me..What a BLAST....LOL...Also have truck pulls stock to pro classes , monster trucks , tractor pulls and even lawn tractor races...LOL... I like the horse and Oxen pulls as well but that's just me....Wife gets bored watching the horse and Oxen....Harness racing too if your into that...Good old fashion country fair..Rides , games , fireworks and GOOD food....4H competion and lots of farm animals ....Fun for the whole family....8 bucks to get in....free parking..Come on up....
