Rheem Split Systems

How is the reliability of Rheem gas furnaces and outdoor AC units for a split sytem? Need to replace the builder grade "Jani-Junk" system (real tired of fixing it)!

You'll get tired of fixing ANY system, till you get someone that installs a system correctly.

supposedly according to Consumer Reports, Rheem is rated second only to American Standard. As a commercial contractor I can purchase any brand I want, and will still reccommend Rheem products for residential above trane carrier york or lennox.

Now, picture in your mind your "Jani-Junk" system. Think long and hard about the duct system, as it too needs complete replacement, and quite possibly upsizing to accomodate higher efficiency equipment.

It very well could be the existing duct system is Junking your Jani faster the the manufacturer designed it to self destruct...

Good points, I believe the existing system is undersized anyway, which is hard on everything...I'm sure a manual J was done when the house was built(wink) Thanks for the info!

What makes you think it's undersized?

The heating or A/C on the 2nd floor is woefully inadequate; other houses of this type in this neighborhood have 2 A/C units outside...it's been the worst aspect of this house since we bought it...it may be that the air handler is underpowered for the size of the house(3200 s.f.) These are just my observations, I'm a Subaru mechanic in "real" life.....!

Your neighbors likely also also have 2 air handlers inside then...one for upstairs..another separate one for down.

An adequately sized system will run constantly at design temps, shouldn't be hard on the system though--for instance, here during this time of the year I try and keep at least one of our heat pumps running all of the time....

an adequately insulated structure would neither gain or lose btu's and would require nothing more than a ERV for adequate heating. cooling and ventilation needs.

What happens when you open a door? :-)

Ididnt enginner nor build the structure.

an interior door? lol

of course all exterior doors open into an airlock, of which one door is required to be closed before the other one will open.....

I could have sworn you told me you were moving in the direction of retirement and striving for a degree in domestic engineering.... :-)

The existing system may not be undersized or at fault, as there could be multiple installation errors causing all of the problems! Janitrol units were not junk if the installation was done properly, if not, all units will have performance failures. Have a manual J & manual D done. Make sure the ductwork & airflow are on target! Good Luck.

Janitrol can't seem to make a unit with a properly sealed blower compartment door. No matter how well it's installed, air whistles through the poorly mounted blower door. Plus they're flimsy all around.Plus they used the same exchangers as the Keeprites, with the popping rings......other than that, they're great..... :-)

Problem now is that our European manufacturer /distributer has has flaked out....which suddenly leaves us taking up all the slack....while at the same time we recently picked a distributer in Hong Kong that is going gangbusters reselling into Vietnam, Korea, etc....and so I'm busier than a fly eating shit here lately.

Sounds almost like a vacation to me....

Turn 49 next sunday...gonna go see my brother saturday...install that relay and outdoors reset in his system and then it's seafood buffet at a Little Creek Casino for supper.

Maybe I'll get lucky afterwards...never know...

Yeah, but you have to admit... the GMP's where junk!

The popping rings are due to an incorrect "high" temp rise. Yeah, I know all about the recall, BUT...

I have yet to find one with popped rings that was operating with-in specifications.
