What's an allotment?

I've seen many folks allude to their "allotment". Is it like a community garden in cities in the states, or something else?

Just curious.

English for "community garden;" often (always?) an annual rental fee, and generally rules for upkeep.

Believe its an individual section of the community garden assigned to one person for their gardening. Their piece of dirt so to speak.

Allotments are the English manifestation of an international movement, widespread in Europe of gardens not attached to houses to provide space for urban dwellers to grow vegetables and fruit or to have small pleasure gardens.
