Barge Board replacement - Larch

I want to buy larch planking as a replacement for my house bargeboards. Some suppliers have told me that they would supply white pine but I do not believe that this has the same ability as Larix decidua which can withstand exposure to all weather and only a little less durable than oak. Larch from Bavaria is the best but I do not know if this is imported into the UK.

Hello Beemer,

I would agree about durability of larch, that is why wooden trawlers were almost always planked wit it (on oak frames).

I dont know about Bavarian larch being superior, i think a few craftmen might have their own ideas!

Mintoes Sawmill in Northumberland used to supply tons of thiss to the fishing boat building industry, but alas the site is now a builders merchant.

You could try:

Or Robbins in Bristol.

Good luck! John T

What was known as Pitch Pine in marine terms is also one of the best. Many older fishing boats were made of this, and I know som which are still in good condition 60 years later. However, salt water is far kinder on wood than fresh (rain) water.

Many thanks. I have used this site which linked to a supplier and he supported my idea of using larch for this purpose.

I have found a larch supplier and only hope that the cost is not prohibitive.
