I'm not suggesting that the wooden one was literally "thrown". Perhaps it was spun in a container? I've already described the game for which it is quite adaptable ("chuck-a-luck" or "bird cage").

Maybe the maker of the wooden one didn't want to pay $450?

What..you want some star drills? Ive got a s*it load of them

And I think Ive still got a Black and Decker Industrial Electric Masonary Drill motor that uses star drills, unless it was in the van when they cleaned it out.
