I think you'll find they mostly eat rotting wood. Most likely your skirting was already suspect.

Woodlice (aka slaters, sowpigs or grammersows etc) have soft mouth-parts, and are only capable of chewing very soft stuff, as you say like rotten wood or other decomposed vegetation.
