I've just moved into a house which has a huge slate-covered fireplace which I am covering over and a surface mounted gas fire which vented through a plate which was covering up what I was told was a standard opening. I have ordered an inset gas fire.
However, when I removed the plate, I found an opening on 12" wide and about 20" high. I need about 16" wide by 22" high.
I have posted a picture of the opening temporarily:

question is, can I just enlarge the opening without causing myself serious problems? If so, any tips? Thanks in advance,
