We had them in Brighton and they did go fast. Especially up some notorious hills!
I never saw one de-wired, but they did change to different wires at times, notable at Old Steine outside the Lyons Corner House. I was occasionally taken there for a treat (bath bun and 'milk and a dash') and always insisted on sitting upstairs by the window so that I could watch the changeover from the top.

They had them in Derby. One day c1960 a neighbour, a rep, took his son and me with him while he did a call in Derby, from Leicester, during the summer holidays. While he did his business me and son sat in the car watching the trolley buses. Back to school, we were asked to write an essay on what we did during the holiday. I wrote about my trip to Derby, probably the furthest I had travelled by car at that time, and watching the trolley buses. Having read the essays the teacher proceeded to comment on them, praising several and ending 'As for Peter Johnson, all he did was watch trolley buses.' I had chosen a subject that few, if any, in the class would have known anything about. I remember nothing of the journey, but it must have seemed interminable going up the old A6 in pre motorway days in a car that probably would have blown up had it gone faster than 40 or 50mph.
