What to do with fat?

Providing there's a reasonable amount of rubbish in the kitchen bin, I pour it onto the rubbish to solidify or soak in.

Isn't that just food supply in general?

Yes. I was feeding the sparrows around my house, and they responded to the increase in the food supply by laying more eggs and raising more chicks. The number of sparrows in the little flock doubled in a year or so. Having a dog that keeps the local cats away undoubtedly contributed too. I don't want to interfere too much with the natural order, so I've cut back on my largesse.

I do find them fascinating to observe. Their instinctive caution is so strong that even though my appearance often coincides with the appearance of food, they still flee on catching sight of me. They didn't get where they are today by being trusting.

Gib Bogle :

Truer, but some birds are more trusting than others. I find that robins and blackbirds will almost eat out of my hand. Pheasants *will* eat out of my hand.

But they are game birds.

My definition of game bird:

One that is stupid enough to be shot.

Yes, even a slight movement inside the house is usually enough to spook them, but a couple of years ago we had a pair of carrion crows coming for the dogs' leftovers which we put out for them, and if we forgot or were late with it they would stand in the garden and screech at the door. Quite sad when they didn't return last year.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like:

One who's up for anything.

Land lords son had two geese eating out of his hand last Friday, now they are a seriously dangerous bird who are not afraid of having a go at you. An afterthought was that it was down to the canal being frozen over. :-)
